STAR WARS™: Dark Forces Remaster

On a technical level I think Nightdive did a great job with the remaster. The music is fantastic. As for the game itself, the levels can be confusing to navigate. Some areas can be pretty dark, although you do have a headlamp. This can add additional confusion to navigating a level but it is cool when you suddenly see shadowy figured emerging from the darkness before lasers start flying everywhere. The pros aren't enough to overcome the poor level design though.

This is a gem of the DOOM clones era. One of the few games of that time to actually just be it's own thing. And even though the Star Wars name and Franchise do a lot of the heavy lifting is it really unfair that they do all the work. Kyle Katarn became a fan favourite because of this game even more than the others. Enemy variety is actually quite high for a game like this, and most of them are nice to fight with the exception of the trandoshan, he is the only enemy with a hit scan and it's explosive... Really unfair. The story is quite serviceable and the cutscenes, as it's usual for Lucas Arts at the time, were always the new benchmark. Level design goes from fun to confusing to Romeroeske... in some I needed a guide because I could not find the path forward no matter how I tried and most of the time it is something really convoluted, other times, while on hard, there are mine behind doors that it is impossible to not take damage. But other than those moments that were really frustrating, the rest makes this game a really fun ride.

Good update to a classic shooter. Star Wars games when they were best!
