Steel Hail is a 3D Top-Down Traversal Twin-Stick Shooter with solid basic mechanics, fun art style, and good game feel, but is hindered by a lack of polish, some indie jank, and a number of bad design choices. The game has a solid shooting feel, with a simple but fun art style. You play with a default weapon, but can pick up other weapons during a level with limited ammo. You also have a dash mechanic that doesn't provide invincibility frames, and a lock on button. The game also provides a simple progression system to make yourself more powerful. The fun of a twin-stick shooter comes from aiming your shots and destroying enemies, while avoiding enemy projectiles. And the game starts off with that kind of gameplay style. However, the game introduces difficulty in a very unfun manner. First of all, the game has a 3 start rating system that focuses exclusively on completion speed. This means if you want to engage with the system, you have to play an avoidance play style, which is not as fun. Second, the progression system is very one-note.
