Step by Step Hero is a fun little game with an interesting idea, wrapped in pleasing Game Boy aesthetics. At first, I sometimes forgot that my steps are limited, but after playing for a while, it totally overtook my brain: I was messaging a friend and had the urge to make the character count as short as possible xD There are some cool retro tunes to listen to as well. If you like roguelites and GB aesthetics, it's a no-brainer to buy it, as the price is really cheap for what you get.

I got this game towards the end of last year, finally getting around to writing my review. I like the Gameboy-style aesthetic and sound. The game was fun and I did enjoy the step mechanic which is the core of the game's design. Gives it a good puzzle feel since you quite literally have to math things out. The simplistic combat and non-random nature of it is easy to grasp. The controls feel slightly wonky and your character tends to get lost going in a straight line sometimes. There are a couple of silly glitches that I'm not sure have been patched since I played (infinite sliding and softlocking at more than 666 steps being the ones I hit most frequently). Oddly enough, the semi-random nature of the rooms is the worst part of this game because it makes it harder to get any real progress since you can end up going in a circle by simply walking in a straight line. I was able to visit some of the other biomes but really didn't explore them much. This game is a real value at $1.99 USD and I suspect anyone that gives this game a solid go will easily play it more than 2 hours and enjoy it, at least once they get a handle on the step mechanic. Bit of a different one this time. Love the gameboy graphics. This one's pretty chill with the main gimmick being that success is based on exploration and you only get 100 steps in any given run but your items and power carry over so it gets easier as you go. Step by Step Hero's an interesting entry in the roguelite genre that's more about exploration than combat. It's relaxing, will keep you entertained for a couple of hours, and is kid-friendly. It's a lucky green step in the right direction for walking simulator games on Steam! It won't even hurt your eyes. Walk in the path of righteousness to wipe out corruption for good! Give this game a running chance, it's truly unique. I wouldn't mind paying 3 dollars instead of 2 dollars for this. Make each step worth it in hopes of saving God's lost sheep

Step By Step Hero is a delightful little adventure game. If you grew up loving Game Boy games, and these days you need a game that fits into your busy and demanding adult life, this is a good choice for you. It took me a little over 2 hours to beat the game, and 4 or 5 hours total to complete all achievements, and I enjoyed the retro visuals and quirky soundtrack all along the way. This game's surprisingly pleasing gameplay loop revolves around seeking out and managing limited steps, gold, and other resources. Combat is minimalist: walk into an enemy, and if you have more HP than its number, you defeat it; if not, you lose 1 HP. Exploration is worry-free: since the next screen you move to is randomly selected, there's no need for a map; just wander until you find something. At the same time, if you plant a Step Seed, you will encounter the resulting step flower again, and your future self will thank you. Here's one last tip the wandering scholars don't share: masked traders usually make bad deals, but they occasionally sell things you couldn't get any other way.
