I like this game a lot, because the real challenge is your motor skills and muscle memory. Every moment you're playing the game, that's the game you're playing and moving around inside the game simply gives you context for moving the little footsies about. This is a game for people who can decide to set a goal, get there, and feel accomplished without having any other external validation. If you want more of my money please make a shoes DLC!

man what a wild ride up the mountain. fun for people that like jump puzzles and frustration, couldve done without the nudity but it added a lot of laughs

The only game that has taught me how to learn how to step and become a motorboat at the same time.

A little backstory: I was aware of Baby Steps but avoided playing it for a long time, largely because of the extent to which I'd heard it described as a "rage game" (a genre I historically do not enjoy). That said, eventually the game spread enough that friends played and emphatically recommended it, so I put aside my misgivings to give it a shot. And I'm glad I did! Baby Steps is an extremely unique game with a distinct sense of humor, and a lot more fun than I think the "rage game" descriptor does justice. Frankly, I'm not even sure that's the best way to describe it- the majority of the game is not about losing progress or struggling fruitlessly (though these things happen occasionally, to be sure). The moment-to-moment gameplay is more about exploration and problem solving: finding routes that look achievable, then working to climb them. Despite being purely built around "walking", it manages to deliver one of the most engaging climbing experiences I can remember playing. The map design is a highlight of this game. This game is so much more than it initially appears to be. At first, it seems like just another completely ridiculous idea, but little by little, you get the hang of the controls, and then the story begins to unfold. Nathan’s relationship with Jim, Moose, and Mike is particularly interesting, while the main character’s motivations emerge in fragments, creating an allegory of a son who leaves home later in life, having to learn how to navigate a new world while, at the same time, trying to face its difficulties and challenges without getting in other people’s way. By the end, the character’s journey shows you that it is perfectly ok to accept help from others as you navigate this strange world. The game’s title is perfect, while the intentionally frustrating gameplay makes the experience of the story feel completely fitting. My rating: 8/10 — excellent and thought-provoking.
