Stereo Boy

Stereo Boy is a great little puzzle game. I would categorize it closer to a game like Monument Valley than something like Baba Is You. It's fairly casual and in a lot of ways quite maze-like, but in a way that truly elevates the humble maze and I found the spacial reasoning and demands of just noticing what's in each level pair to be super rewarding. Plus there were definitely a few gems of puzzles that reminded me of the best puzzles from other more pure deduction puzzle games. My only real criticisms are the combat stuff (which is mitigated by being able to gain infinite lives), and many of the levels that didn't fit entirely within the camera (with the exception of many of the more linear ending levels).

A competent puzzle game; it explains its mechanics well, ramps up difficulty gradually, introduces enough mechanics to keep things interesting without adding so many as to be overwhelming, and doesn't require absurd moon logic for its puzzles. The trailer shows the premise very well, it's not hiding anything. I do recommend the game, but you might want to wait for a sale as it's on the short side.

Stereo Boy is a very good puzzler. The difficulty curve is pretty much spot on, with the first area being a nice warm up to get used to the game mechanics, and new mechanics gradually introduced in Areas 2, 3 and 4. The puzzles themselves are easy enough if all you care about is getting to the goal on each level. However, the real challenge comes in when trying to gather all collectables. Only on two occasions did I have an issue with perspective hampering my ability to see a puzzle's solution clearly. The difficulty can be increased or decreased by changing the number of HP you have, which is a nice feature to have. The music is well integrated into the game, with a different soundtrack for each active dimension. The visuals are simple, and work well with this game. The controls are a bit janky at times, meaning I switched between controller and keyboard on a couple of levels, but for the most part just went with controller. The plot, insofar as there is one, doesn't get in the way, and does dish out some jibes at well-known public figures, and the game does poke some fun at itself and its players too. Fun, cute, makes you think. It takes a bit to get the hang of warping back and forth and wrapping your mind around the "quantum" state of certain block behavior (or maybe I'm just kind of slow and dumb), but once you do, it's super fun and satisfying. It's challenging in an approachable way. I personally dig the art and the musical ambiance as you go back and forth between worlds. This could have been one of those games where it's just level after level but the story line really is a nice touch.
