About Teslapunk

"Teslapunk" is a retro style arcade shoot-em-up. It plays in a Teslapunk (subgenre of Steampunk) universe where all enemies and spaceships run on high-voltage and occasionally explode into lightning. Each of the six levels features a different style, from technical drawings, to pure electricity to organic styles. The final battle features the mars boss himself, as a disco DJ throwing deadly music discs at the player.
Teslapunk has bullet hell and puzzle shooter elements. You play through the levels, dodging bullets, and killing enemies with a laser or spread shot. As a special feature you have a "Voltage Burst", a special laser mode which cancels all bullets and gives you a strong laser for a limited time.
Canceling bullets raises the score multiplier and thus the score. The multiplier is also coupled to a rank system and therefore increases the difficulty dynamically.

The game play is completely time scripted, developed with a special sequence editor. This results in the game play being perfectly orchestrated with the music giving the player a very enjoyable flow with the game. Boss patterns in sync with the music are another feature of the game.

As a bonus game mode there is the survival mode in which you have to fight endless attack waves, collecting coins and power-ups on your way. The coins can be spent in the "Teslamart" to upgrade the ship and buy extra items. The goal is to survive as long as possible.

Furthermore Teslapunk features missions for the arcade mode and unlockable gallery picture.

Story wise you play as Nikola Tesla to fight an invasion against an evil emperor from mars. The mars boss has its own TV channel at the side of the screen and comments your fight against the invasion. He will also be the end boss of the last level.

✦ AI summary

Players are divided on this shoot-em-up's merits. Supporters praise its accessible mechanics, creative music that syncs with stages and bosses, unique visual style, and solid design for genre newcomers, though some acknowledge it won't satisfy hardcore shmup veterans. Critics find the graphics dull and grey, the enemy behavior repetitive and unimaginative, the mechanics lacking depth compared to other games in the genre, and feel it offers little value for the price, with some also noting missing quality-of-life features like pause functionality.

Don't be fooled by the effusive positive reviews. Let's be real, this game is about as "complicated" as a Flash game circa 2000. Graphics are absolutely hideous and the scrolling backgrounds are offensive. The entire game is basically grey and there's no creativity in the enemy sprites or their behavior... they just slowly float off the top of the screen... sit there... emit some bullets... and be blown up. Mechanics are incredibly weak and there's no satisfaction found (for me anyways) with the bullet canceling. I've played a couple hundred shoot-em-up games in my life... can confidently say there is absolutely no reason to spend money here.

A simple three button shmup (Standard Fire, Focus Fire, Hyper) that does a great job of presenting some of the STG basics in an easily palatable format (even if the story takes itself with exactly zero seriousness). The scoring in this game is equally basic (hyper bullet cancels multiply your score for each bullet cleared, a multiplier that diminishes with time). As your multiplier increases, the game gets harder. Bosses are interesting a varied, utilizing some classic STG tropes. All in all, this shmup will probably not be among any true shmuppers top picks (certainly not mine), but it is solid, and enjoyable for it's zaniness; a great way for beginners to get their feet wet. Would recommend.

It's good for what it is. Teslapunk doesn't exactly do anything new, but that's fine by me. It is a fun shmup in general and I can't complain. I especially like the music as well as the art-style here. This game has a unique survival mode that's also quite fun. Worth it at full price or on sale.

Nice game, pretty cool visual, the stages and bosses actually sync very well with the music, especially the boss in level 5, the music is the strong aspect of this game. The game actually have other mode to keep you hooked into the game, and practice mode to improve your skill. However, there is no pause or quit button to retry when you mess up your 1 cc run in some sections, which is a big deal.
