You know... a GAME. Buttons. Challenges. Puzzles. The occasional opportunity to commit harmless digital property damage. Instead I got dragged into one of the most captivating storytelling experiences I've ever had and now I'm standing here emotionally confused, waving my arms around like a Victorian lunatic. Let's get something straight immediately: This is not really a game. There are no puzzles. There are no enemies. There are no skill trees. Nobody asks you to collect 14 bear pelts for a man named Greg. There isn't even a way to fail. And somehow this beautiful little weirdo held my attention for four straight hours while I happily followed it from 1914 London across Scotland and back again. HOW? What sorcery is this? The entire experience keeps you in the role of the reader rather than the protagonist, which sounds like it should be boring but instead works ridiculously well. Another of the "not really a game" type of trash that's littering Steam. Got this for free many years ago and even at that, wasn't worth my time. As with a few other "games" I've ended up with over the years, the best thing about it is being able to remove it from my account.

Got caught in a spy thriller just as I forgot my apartment keys - now I’m running on trains with a secret in my sock and suspect every man with tea. This game sticks like a rainy night detective novel.

Owned this game for years and finally sat down to play, or read, really, the whole thing. If you're into visual novels and are looking for a classic 20th century English twist then look no further. Solid experience, for sure. Also, super easy achievements.

It's sad to see so many people were turned off of this adaptation for in my mind unfair reasons. First everyone complained you had to rotate the mouse to continue the text, when if you actually read the controls it said you can also do this by using the left and right arrow keys. The optional mouse movement control is to mimic turning the pages of a book. Many people also complain that this adaptation is not as in detail/pales in comparison to the actual book, and whether that may or may not be true, as someone who never read the original book I can say the story here in itself stands on its own merit. I didn't feel that characters lacked enough characterization nor do I think the shortened length affected the comprehensibility of the plot. That being said experiencing this made me want to go read the original book and I hope it would do the same for you. At first I thought this was going to be a pretty boring experience since there's very little interactivity and is mostly just moving through the story, and for the first chapter or two the rather stiff and antiquated English turned me off somewhat.
