Instead of a structured review, let me share my story with the Bard's Tale remasters. When Inxile announced Bard's Tale IV, I was really excited - one of my all-time favourites gets a follow-up nearly 30 years later! The kickstarter deal was made even sweater with the promise of the remasters - I hadn't played Bard's Tale III since the 90s, and never really played the first two; and one sorry attempt in the early 2010s convinced me that I possibly never would, time not being kind on my patience. Now, everyone knows the difficulties with the remaster, I don't want to go there - the important thing is they finally saw the light in 2019. I started playing BT1: Tales of the Unknown - and I was clobbered to all kinds of hell in minutes. I mean, I was aware that level 1 characters were supposed to die often, but then BT1 was something different. I soon gave up, and the years went by - I thought of the game like every 3 months, decided that right then I didn't have the patience to die every 30 seconds, and moved on. And now, after mere 6-7 years, I finally dug deep, and decided to give the game a more determined try. I still kind of recalled all the grinding I did in BT3, and decided th…2 found this helpful
The constant darkness ruins the game. Wasting my time its in every dungeon and in a specific tower over 80% is like that. Wasted my time and money on this game.
This is what a remaster should be like!
It is fairly true to the original, with prettier graphics
The game sold how many millions of copies? I wonder how many people actually played this trash. Anyway, the level design is absolute pathetic (get used to wandering around in the dark). The combat system is dry, repetitive, and unrewarding (nothing like spending 8 real minutes to get a dozen basic arrows at level 40). The dungeons / quests require you to know what to do before you start them (don't have a full roster in BT2 or you'll just get trapped in the dungeon, reload from an hours earlier save is the only way out). Although the 1st game is "ok" and "playable" the 2nd game just drops off a cliff and pushes all the worst parts of the game even further - 2nd dungeon in, I'm tapping out. TLDR: The game was designed by a psycho who's plan was to test the extent of your optimism measuring how much BS you will tolerate before you quit to go play a fun game.
This is a game i've 100% on xbox one and currently comming back to. So with that i highly recommend the game! The only issue is that you'll notice that while getting the Nemesis trophy it'll pop up multiple times before you actually get it. Oddly you have to win a few battles in a dungeon to get it; but only those last 5.
