What a long history with this game. I bought this game on CD-ROM about 2002. I played this game all the way through at least twice. I've played it halfway through another 10 times. This is the first and only RPG that was fully turn based mode, which through me off. I had played BG1, BG2, IWD1, Planescape Torment (Mostly Black Isle Studios and Interplay, which was propelled by the 3 dudes that created Bioware, along with Feargus. The stars of the group became Bioware. This game was different, but had the quality RPG elements. This game allowed free choice. The player is allowed to move from map to map easily, only after they have defeated enemies in some of those areas. Only through using the skills, both melee and magic, do you increase your skills. By acting with choices, your skills slowly increase. When you level up, you can further increase attributes and skills. There is magic in the story. It is both silly, and serious. Weird right? But this seems natural to the story. You eventually travel through so many different environments that you feel very proud to clear them. the absolute classic, the last great golden-era dungeon crawler. Super fun classes, challenging but fun gameplay, tonnes of content, and really satisfying to play. You do need to install the fan patch and probably the speed patch, but the game is an absolute must for RPG fans.

The game is incompatible with modern hardware and will not launch. Waste of time.

Played this when it first came out, it was enjoyable until it was not. You pick your toons, and start out with swords, shields, magic, but unless you have ranger or a mook, you have no range weapons, which would not be problem, except when you start a battle, you do not move, and the mobs are so far back, your melee cannot attack them. Run out of spells, and range weapons really fast.

These are the games that Etrian Odyssey was based on. Despite slow animations, this still holds up in 2026 even after I played it to death when it came out. Brutally difficult turn-based combat with the best skill and magic systems ever designed for any RPG. Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord just came out and Atari just purchased the rights to the first five Wizardry games, so expect to see this genre spike in popularity soon, especially in Japan. You should head on over to GOG and pick this up for $1.50, along with Wizardry 7 for a mere $1! Gaben doesn't need another new yacht or any more donuts, and I don't recommend supporting Valve because of their ethics.
