The Beanstalk

If you are looking through the VR free-to-play tags, The Beanstalk VR experience does not hold up in 2022. Just skip it. The Beanstalk a short 5-10 minute experience which tells a fairy tale story based off Jack and the Beanstalk. As a first student project, it's a GREAT project to use on a resume to get a job but never something you'd release as a commercial project. If I made this as a first class VR project, I'd be EXTREMELY proud of it. They did a great job on the project for 2017. If you're a consumer and want to know why I don't recommend it, here is why: The majority of the experience is only listening/waiting not interacting. You pull on a tabs of story boards to progress the experience, grab a few beans and toss them in the dirt, climb up a small portion of the beanstalk and then touch a harp. That's the The Beanstalk.

"The Beanstalk" is a product from the Latter Day Saints BYU university in Provo, Utah. Today the students took on the classic Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale, with some low poly art assets (not entirely uncharming, in fairness), and bolted it onto a "VR Experience", making this less of a game and more of a VR demo... and ultimately we have to once more ask the question, "What's in it for us?"... yes, there's not much here for gamers, the point of the exercise is to make it feel like the students passed the course or something. I guess the first thing they should be teaching game development students is "the gamer is more important than you are". The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. Игра "The Beanstalk" оказалась приятным сюрпризом. Изначально я ожидала простую казуалку, но получила нечто большее. Графика в милом мультяшном стиле сразу привлекает внимание, а геймплей, хоть и незамысловатый, затягивает. Основная задача – вырастить гигантский бобовый стебель, собирая бонусы и избегая препятствий. Понравилась система улучшений, позволяющая модифицировать способности главного героя и открывать новые локации на стебле. Процесс довольно аддиктивный: всегда хочется достигнуть еще большей высоты и открыть все секреты. Музыкальное сопровождение ненавязчивое, хорошо вписывается в атмосферу сказки. Однако, игра не без минусов. Иногда встречаются однообразные участки, и после длительной игры может показаться немного монотонной. Не помешали бы дополнительные режимы или челленджи, чтобы разнообразить игровой процесс. В целом, "The Beanstalk" – это достойная игра для тех, кто ищет что-то расслабляющее и увлекательное, чтобы скоротать время. Рекомендую попробовать!

Underwhelming. The beanstalk growth was neat but it should've let you climb from the ground and then transitioned to a higher bit that lets you climb right into the giants house. It might be cool to someone who is new or a young one but otherwise...meh. It's like 1 second long lol and climbing is glitchy.
