The Cursed Legacy

First, know that this is a "to be continued game". It seems to end before it barely starts. Second, it's not worth starting. This game has some things going for it. The atmosphere is pretty well done and the setting is alluring. But there's very little going on. The story is paper-thin and exploration will not add to what is told to you. And, well, it relies to heavily on jump scares, the cheapest trick in the book. But it's the gameplay that drags [i]The Cursed Legacy[/i] down. The puzzles all have a good core, but they're realized through frustrating and tedious activities, all very poorly indicated. You'll spend less time thinking about solutions and more time figuring out what you're supposed to click on. There are also awful "combat" scenes. Completely unnecessary, annoying, and in conflict with the atmosphere. Finally, I had various technical issues. For one, it seemed locked at a pretty low resolution for me. It just wouldn't show my 4K as an option. Oh, well. I would suggest that rather than continuing the "story", the dev should learn from what didn't work here and start over. There's definitely talent there. It just needs to be honed.

This game has nothing to do with its tags, it's just a cheap horror game with even cheaper jumpscares. "Find X items which are randomly located" is not fun, and it's not a puzzle. The developer probably has no idea what a puzzle, detective/investigation game looks like. Don't believe its premise.

The Cursed Legacy was a shorter experience than expected. You enter a small mansion, try to find items to help you progress and you solve some puzzles. A lot of it is very brief and happens quickly. Even the story is left on a cliffhanger and there wasn’t much of it to begin with. A lot of what you do is not very original either. Because of this, I ask myself if it’s needed to experience the game for fans of the genre. It doesn’t leave a lasting impression. That’s not to say it doesn’t do a couple of things right. The graphics look gorgeous while the performance is decent, showing the total amount of items you can find for an achievement is a nice touch, the controls are good, the game is very atmospheric, the achievements are fine, I haven’t noticed any bugs and banishing a ghost was pretty interesting. In terms of flaws, I would have liked a warning before picking up the suitcase. I was still missing one candle, it was a pain trying to find it while dealing with the ghost. Some of the puzzles also seemed too obtuse/challenging but I did find a decent written guide online at least. I’m not sure whether to recommend the game or not. It’s far from being bad but it’s pretty forge…

I wanted to like the game, but the game was frustrating and convoluted enough that I just can't recommend it. For example, in one puzzle, there's a picture of various flowers, and on one of the blue flowers it has written the number "4". Additionally, there's a sticky note next to the picture of the flowers that says "BLUE = 4" (why the developer repeated the same clue TWICE versus a NEW piece of information I'll never know). It also shows _ _ _ _ _ _ on a chalkboard next to the picture of flowers and an arrow. The blue flower had four dots on it, so I thought I count the dots perhaps. Nope, that wasn't it. Ah, well _ _ _ _ _ _ might mean something like "PETALS" or "FLOWER" or "LEAVES", so I should count the number of petals or leaves or flowers for each color in the picture, right? Nope, that wasn't it either. Turns out, [spoiler]you had to go around the house and look for numbers in the paintings, and the _ _ _ _ _ _ represented you had to press 6 different buttons. Sigh, ok fine -- if you are reading this review, just note that if you are ever stuck, look at the paintings around the house.[/spoiler] Other things felt painful for no reason.
