Players praise this detective game for its impressive world-building, logical deductive reasoning, and impressive solo-developer craft, comparing it favorably to classic adventure games like Return of the Obra Dinn. However, complaints center on the game feeling unfinished with an abrupt ending, some obtuse puzzle solutions, unclear gameplay mechanics, and a lack of guidance that can make it frustratingly difficult compared to more structured detective games—some players also report hitting failure states after too many wrong guesses.
Decent detective game, though with some missable clues. Also encountered some situation where I got guesses wrong too many times and was not allowed to try further because I was using up too much time or something.4 found this helpful
a very good obra'dinn when I see one !3 found this helpful
This is a unique detective game that feels like a throwback to the old PC adventure games, specifically the Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes games. Also this is a real solo dev project, meaning only ONE person made this entire thing. Impressive stuff. The world-building on display makes me immediately want another game set in this world. It has an Eastern-European vibe to it and it's set on a whole fictional planet with its own fictional countries and ethnicities. There's so much lore in this game that a lot of it isn't even relevant to the main story. Very cool. This might just be one of my favorite ever PC adventure games. It's that good. And I hope there's more on the way!3 found this helpful
I really enjoyed my time with this game. For what little there is, it's a surprisingly thorough and logical detective game. However it's very clearly unfinished. The ending is very abrupt and unsatisfying. This game feels like the opening chapter of a much larger experience that was abandoned. I can see why. There is an impressive commitment to the deductive reasoning in this game, that was likely exhausting to maintain for what i assume to be a very small team of devs. I would really love to see more from gameplay supremacy. Clearly a lot of talent on display here.3 found this helpful
Clearly a labor of love and incredibly immersive. I had a blast trying to solve every last mystery in this game. At times some of the puzzle solutions were a bit obtuse (categorizing the artifacts was the worst offender) and I wish the game made some of the gameplay elements clearer such as using blank sheets of paper for footprints. The setting is amazing though and the detective work was so fun. I'd love to see this same system get refined even further with a future game. Please keep making games like this!!3 found this helpful
A short but highly enjoyable detective game. If you are a person who has already played Return of the Obra Dinn and other similar games like those in the Golden Idol series, then buying this game should be a no-brainer. Admittedly, Mystery of the Malign can get a bit frustrating at times since it lacks the restricted structure of either the Obra Dinn or the Golden Idol games since you havee to actually move around in a 3D world with no handholding at all. The Obra Dinn by comparison heavily restricts player movement and therefore, in my opinion at least, helps the player better understand what must be looked at in order to progress further. I would suggest holding off on this game until you have played the other games that I have mentioned since, though it is a great game seen on its own, it is not as good as the abovementioned games.1 found this helpful
