I enjoyed my time with "The Lingering: Graveyard Visit" quite a bit. There are some issues here and there, but overall, it's a nice supernatural horror game! Though I have to admit, I spent a vast majority of my time not on the main story, but
figuring out the Caesar Cipher and the strange hidden area that I still don't know how to properly activate. You essentially get to it by completing all endings
, yes, there are multiple endings
and triggering a secret area at a specific time in the story. However, once there, nothing seems to happen? It also doesn't help that the hidden messages aren't in English and some translation software, some guesswork, and a real interest in figuring it out will be needed. To this day, I still don't know the actual truth behind the secret.
The story itself is quite nice and straight forward with a few twists here and there. There are some translation issues (very minor and inconsequential, I'm just a detail oriented English teacher) when I played, but they did not detract from the game. The scares were interesting, though only got to me on occasion. The over reliance on some sound effects gets old quickly, b…

Played it on release day but just writing a review now, lol. Solid game — I really enjoyed the story! Though some parts still don’t make much sense to me. Would’ve been cooler with an extra twist on why all the clues point to the mom. Worth to tryyy! You’ll be haunted by curiosity the whole time

Simple gameplay and art style, but an excellent atmosphere and great sound design. OK I think the sound effects for the doors were broken and were delayed long after the door had finished closing, also I got stuck behind a fence at one point and had to restart the chapter. But other than that the game ran smoothly and was a mysterious and spooky time. I liked learning about the culture and folklore from the eyes of our 11 year old protagonist, and the vibes of the graveyard at night were surprisingly peaceful and pleasant. The dread and uncertainty coming from other sources much closer to home. There are of course jump scares, some of which I missed and only heard the sound effect for, some of which made me laugh, and some of which actually made me jump. I liked the story, even though I guessed the truth right at the very start, it still played out well and had an emotional impact. A very sweet and a bit silly indie horror that won't change your life but is effective in its atmosphere and setting, and worth playing.

Spoopy: 6/10 Overall: 7/10 Good: * Story was predictable. But really well done. * The pacing was dramatically improved in this game. Compared to the first episode and the previous anthology of Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror games. * There was a Global Sound option. * Atmosphere was spooky, especially inside the houses. * The multiple endings were very well done. * You can load the game from different points in the story. This helped with collecting the multiple endings and made it feel enjoyable rather than tedious. * Had a prelude at the start to help to explain the setting and the story. Bad: * Relied Heavily on Jump Scares. * Game is too expensive. * I bugged the game a few times. I had to restart the game to fix it. * The text was a bit hard to read. Buy the game when it is on sale for 50% off.

This game is very much an improvement over Last Customer, the devs' previous game in The Lingering series. Starting with the graphics: I love the PS1 aesthetic they are going for, and I like their attention to detail in the environment. It was quite a treat to be looking around and seeing how they furnished everything. However, I do think the game can be a tad too dark and hard to see sometimes, maybe just have an option for brightness in the settings? Yeah, someone could "cheat" by boosting it to 200% to not be scared, but at least it's giving an option to someone who might be seeing less than you wanted them to. Sounds: Differently from their previous game, the sounds in this game were quite nice. Some creepy ambiance going in the background here and there, or a weird sound in the distance. Nothing too creepy to try to scare you, but just a unsettling enough to make you feel less comfortable in the story's location. Story: Without going into much detail, I really really loved it. While it was a bit predictable to me, to the point that I kinda figured out some details quite early, it was still very very fun to see the story develop. I'm glad that the devs allowed the story to s…
