The Lodge

"The Lodge" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from Cogswell University in the USA. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. This is a pretty bad first person psychological horror game. While the concept had legs, the technical implementation is a wreck, and the students only worked on it for 3 months. There's so many things game development students must be taught, but amongst them should be "It takes longer than 3 months to make a game properly." As a result we have a buggy train wreck. No. The sound is decent but the sound design is excessive and the volume is all out of whack. The game looks nice in still images. But it chugs like a teen at a frat party, and the flashing lights warning undersells just HOW BAD it is. I had to stop partway through and take an hours-long break before finishing it. "Finishing it" being solve the last of the poorly implemented puzzles, get killed, and get a black screen with some public domain old-timey music playing over it. No credits. A two sentence voice over that resolves nothing, and then the void. I hope the devs learned a lot in their class. But it doesn't show.

The game is not optimized at all.

When they said that this game could trigger photosensitve epilepsy they were not lying. Gave my friend a migrane, and both of us nausea. don't.

I couldn't figure out what to do to progress and I suspect my game glitched into the point of no return. I can't recommend based on that although I enjoyed the cheesy dialogue.
