The Shadow Over Cyberspace

There is something immediately refreshing about The Shadow Over Cyberspace. In an era where even small indie games are often wrapped in roadmaps, monetization hooks, premium currencies, cosmetic stores, season passes, or “free” entry points designed to funnel players into spending money later, Fiction Factory Games released a fully complete game for free and then quietly added an optional “shareware donation” DLC for people who simply want to support the developers. That decision alone gives the game an identity before you even click “Play.” It feels almost rebellious. The game proudly embraces the spirit of the old shareware era, not just aesthetically but philosophically. In the 1990s, shareware was built on trust: developers gave players something substantial first and hoped the audience would support them afterward if they believed in the experience. The Shadow Over Cyberspace revives that mindset in a modern gaming landscape where it has nearly disappeared. That old-school spirit is fitting because this is also a game obsessed with the late 1990s internet. I was alive in 1990. No software would've asked for pronouns then. Putting this into a game set at that time and making it something that has to be engaged with is pretty gay dude... not to mention inaccurate af and just lame.

Very fun anachronistic hacker VN, unfortunately let down by the conventions of its genre. I can wholeheartedly recommend the first 75%-ish of it, but I have two major sticking points, one fair and one unfair. So, play the game. Give it a go, and I'll start with my unfair point. Everything beneath the line is eldritch rambling, though. [hr][/hr] Despite one of the game's main characters being 'trans girl 4chan' (no, as in like... there's no time. You'll figure it out), when a transfemme Z3R0D4Y comes out to Nyarlothotep, their early experiences with queerness are, universally, transmasc 'lesbians' (their quotes, not mine). Minor... teensy... tiny little quibble... but do the developers thing transgender women were invented in the 2010s? And, if so, how come creepypasta and GME get imported but we don't?? We have tgirl abusebait miserable dollgirl [spoiler]Alice[/spoiler], but our MC has never encountered another (human) trans woman??? This is obviously not intentional, and quite unfair. Truly wonderful game, the lore is fascinating, and I found it very interesting as I am currently doing a project on modern interpretations of cosmic horror. The visuals are great, the characters are interesting, the dialogue is well written, and it has all the charm of heartfelt interaction with the characters without being a dating sim, the characters really feel alive and I personally found it easy to connect to them. all in all, incredible game and its tragic that it is not more popular.

The game is a bit Boring. But if you like lovecraftian and text games you will love it
