About To the Top

an·ger/ˈaNGɡər/: a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility.

I made this game to make you angry.

To the Top is a punishing 2D platformer, a short introduction and homage to the "rage-game" genre. You move left, right, aim with the mouse, and launch yourself onto platforms. That's the game. Throw in an ounce of log-collecting gameplay and a small story and you've got yourself "To the Top".

With enough time and practice, you can truly fly through the game, climbing your way towards the top of each new challenging area. Or you could fall down over, and over, and over again. Your choice.

  • Leap through new areas with the power of your own legs
  • Indulge in a short, wholesome narrative
  • Listen to soothing piano tracks
  • Make temporary progress with permanent anger
  • Experience the wonderful sensation of rage

✦ AI summary

Players are divided on To the Top, with some finding it engaging enough despite its unconventional flinging-based controls rather than traditional jumping mechanics. Common criticisms include the game being part of Steam's oversaturated platformer market, difficult to the point of frustration, and ultimately not offering enough innovation to stand out, though a few players appreciate it as a decent free-to-play experience if you can persist through the difficulty curve.

Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This godawfully bad precision platformer relies on a Angry Birds style flinging mechanism instead of normal jumping, because apparently ezmode for game developers is to just make your controls bad instead of creating actually challenging content. Anyway, it was ultimately a failure as it turns out most gamers aren't really all that interested in pixelcrap platformers. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this …
