Toxic Bunny HD

Toxic Bunny is what happens when a caffeine-fueled rabbit goes on a rampage and I love every second of it. Explosions, sarcasm, and chaotic platforming—pure retro madness. 10/10 would chug coffee and play again.

Short and fun janky little game. I enjoyed it despite its shortcomings. Kind of reminds me of Bubsy meets Earthworm Jim.

A few years ago, my brother in law let me try one of his games called Toxic Bunny. I thought it was okay but kind of hard. When I saw that it was getting a HD remake, I thought I’ll put it on my Wishlist backburner for a later time. And that time is now cause I felt like it. Pros: -It’s got a difficulty setting, which for a remaster version of a hard game should be encouraged. -The potion system has been redone. Instead of mixing whatever potions you find and using a guide or cheat sheet to get the one you want, you just find the recipes and they go into their own inventory for easy use. -The different weapons all have a good punch to and can be very handy depending on the area. And while you can only get ammo from shops, money is everywhere so you and the machine gun and ray gun have infinite ammo so you should be fine. -Really good map that shows the whole level so you don’t get lost. And there’s a list of objectives on screen at all times so you know what you should be doing. -Also, this might be the dev realising how bull crap some of the game could be but there are lives almost everywhere, especially at end game and if you die you just continue from where you are with no pena…

Controls didn't work for me, keyboard or controller. I manually configured my controller and got it to work, but if I had not, I would have still thought this might be a good game. However, the jumping mechanic is broken. I know how tricky it can be to get a good jumping mechanic working, but this is nowhere near considered "passable". I think if the running and jumping mechanic was improved, this game would be a million times better. What I am saying is, this game could be fixed if the game devs are willing to work on the controls mechanic. This is a 24 FPS game that was ported to Unity and can run at 60 fps, but all the mechanics/animations/timing is still based on 24 FPS. Apparently the only purpose of this re-release from 1996, was to port it to Unity so that it would be playable on modern computers and increase the resolution. If you played this back in 1996 and now you want to play it today, I suppose this is great. If you never played the original and are trying to play it for the first time in 2022, it's pretty bad.

Although this title is one of my most nostalgic games, the HD version doesn't do it credit. Lots of bugs and glitches, the movement is rough, and most of the time the pointing/help thing is pretty rough. I wish it would've lived up to the sweet, sweet memories I have of this game, but alas.

I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to leave a negative review for this game, but after less than a minute of clunkily trying to run around, with the game fighting me every step of the way, I've decided that I'm going to cash out before I can annoy myself any further. I'm just glad that I paid for this so that I don't have to feel bad about downloading the original online instead. To anyone who's considering buying this: DO NOT. While the game is not unplayable, the original release is MILES better than whatever this is. The only thing I have to say about this is that I appreciate whoever re-did the graphics, because they obviously put a lot of time and effort into it, even though I vastly prefer the old school look. Adding music and all the extra sound effects was really nice, but it all gets so overwhelming after a while that I honestly just prefer the stripped back SFX that the original game went with. I just feel like the devs did all they could to remove every last trace of charm that the original had to offer - even down to the little comic strip at the start.
