About Varius

✦ AI summary

Match incoming projectiles to your shield color or face destruction in this frenetic arcade challenge. With three distinct modes—endless survival, brick-shattering chaos, and memory-based sequences—Varius delivers escalating difficulty and increasingly wild mechanics that keep you on your toes.

Choose Wisely

The core of Varius is simple: match colors or die. You must change the color of your shuttle's shields to match the color of the projectile to deflect it.

Features 3 Game Modes

  • Survive: Death is always imminent as you volley an accelerating projectile. Good luck, as you attempt to fight off your inevitable end.
  • Shatter: Deflect the projectile to destroy the bricks. Colored bricks will change the color of the projectile, while special bricks add to the chaos. Lasers, explosions, freezing, even gravity changing and being left in the darkness.
  • Sequence: You are given a sequence of colors, which grows every round that you progress. The projectile's color will be hidden, so it is up to you to remember the sequence or be destroyed.

✦ AI summary

Players praise Varius as a charming, affordable indie color-matching game with fluid gameplay, a clean UI, and simple but engaging mechanics that make it easy to lose time in. The main criticism is the lack of a campaign or story mode, with only three arcade-style mini-games available, though some note the keyboard-only controls (no mouse support) work fine for the color-swapping mechanic.

Do you like color matching games? Those indie ones in which you have to match projectiles and colors in order to pop bubbles or destroy tiles? Well, you must love them if you want to approach to this indie game. The game is entirely keyboard-driven, and even the main menu can be navigated only with the directional keys - it's all quite retro. You can still play with a controller, though, but the mouse will be useless. There will be three main playing modes and they have a base in common - on the left of the screen there's a bar depicting the shuttle, the barrier and the shield; the core shuttle will be the thing you'll be able to move up and down. You'll face projectiles that will take the color of the chromatic bar in the right part of the screen - your shield will have to match those colors. The three modes are a survival one (just an endless form, basically), a shatter mode which will ask you to clear out all the blocks on the screen by reflecting the colored projectiles as said above and a sequence mode in which you'll be given some colors growing in number as you move on, and the projectiles will be black so you'll have to remember the color sequence (quite frustrating and bor…

Varius is a retro-looking match the colour game with very simple, but engaging and often difficult gameplay. Basically you control a shuttle, sometimes two, by moving them up and down to deflect projectiles. Not only that, but you also have to change their colours to blue, yellow, red or green. The projectile’s colour and that of the shuttles need to match upon impact, otherwise your shuttle will shatter and you’ll lose. What makes it a little more challenging is that sometimes the projectile will have a different colour than those available to you because it has to bounce off of the barrier that your shuttle rests on. There are 3 game modes: Survive, which makes the projectile get progressively faster; Shatter, where your goal is to deflect the incoming projectile while also attempting to destroy the bricks; and Sequence, which requires you to remember the given sequence of colours. My personal favourite was Shatter. I could probably play that game mode for hours uninterrupted (and I will). Tactical efficiency/10.

The game is good. There's no story mode. I know the developer of it and he's really cool. He can operate a toaster when lives are on the line. He's good at games.

No "campaign/story mode". It's three mini-games: A time based one which increases difficulty the longer it goes (with no blocks) A 'Simon Says' style one (with no blocks) A random block layout (with only one life) And there's no mouse controls (though that may be a challenge considering the color swapping).
