About VVVVVV

✦ AI summary

Guide Captain Viridian through a gravity-flipping platformer to rescue your teleported crew and save the universe. With no power-ups or artificial gates, pure skill and clever level design are all that stand between you and victory, backed by frequent checkpoints and a legendary chiptune soundtrack.

Help! Everyone has been teleported away randomly! As the heroic Captain Viridian, it's up to you to find your friends, bring them back to safety, and save the universe!

VVVVVV is a platform game all about exploring one simple mechanical idea - what if you reversed gravity instead of jumping?

The game is designed not to artificially gate your progress. In VVVVVV there are no locks, no power-ups, no switches, nothing to stop you progressing except the challenges themselves.

Key features:

  • Elegant, minimalistic level design.
  • Challenging, fast and fun gameplay.
  • Frequent checkpoints mean you never have to replay challenges you've already beaten.
  • Over half an hour of chiptune music by composer Magnus Pålsson.
  • Special game modes, including time trials and a no death mode.
  • A powerful and easy to use level editor for creating your own dimensions to explore.

It's good, but I don't think it's great. Which is unfortunate, because I really wish it were better. I finally got around to playing this and I'm sure there's nothing I can say here that hasn't already been said before in other critical reviews, but to sum it up: it has some annoying flaws that don't really kill the experience, but do hamper its quality. The music is great and I find the art style cute. I don't have any complaints when it comes to these. The story is fine, I didn't pick up the game for the story, after all. The controls are *slightly* slippery but not *too* slippery, which is fine for the vast majority of the game, but that makes a few specific challenges frustrating because they require dumb amounts of precision and speed (e.g: the Edge Games trinket). I did try turning down my gamepad's sensitivity, but it seems like that extra bit of momentum is inherent to the physics of the game. The difficulty is highly uneven. The game is fairly easy/normal for the most part, but then there's a few outlier parts that require countless attempts (e.g: Doing Things The Hard Way) because that's when the lack of tight controls (coupled with expected perfection from the playe…

I do recommend this game, it's short, straight to the point, charming and precise platformer depending on how you play it should take you around 2 or 3 hours to complete. It has collectables, and once you beat it you unlock a few more modes to keep playing, worth the money and time def!

Beaten on steam and on mobile way back in the day. Keep thinking about it to this day over 10 years later. Absolute banger of a game and ESPECIALLY the soundtrack! Hope Terry is doing well these days!
