About Wilderplace
✦ AI summary
Explore a mystical maze-like garden where you solve interconnected puzzles by understanding and influencing the goals of restless spirits and other inhabitants rather than fighting them. Uncover a nuanced story while collecting magical artifacts that fundamentally change how you approach the same spaces, all rendered in stunning hand-drawn art across 150+ turn-based puzzles.
A contemplative adventure in the Divine Garden awaits. Explore a maze-like world, harness magical artifacts, and uncover mysteries as you wrangle restless spirits and evade dangerous intruders.
What sets Wilderplace's gameplay apart?
- Dynamic NPC interactions: The Divine Garden is full of denizens and intruders with distinct goals and priorities. To succeed, you'll need to understand and influence how these characters interact with each other and the world.
- Strong narrative: Puzzle mechanics directly support the game's story. Every new NPC or obstacle you encounter on your journey enriches the world and ups the challenge at the same time.
- Interconnected world map: Individual levels can be solved in many different ways, and become frozen in place after beating them. Each puzzle is connected in a branching, Metroidvania-style world map. Even though levels are hand-crafted, each play-through is unique.
- Inventory-based progression system: You start your journey with nothing but your trusty staff. As you explore, you unlock new problem-solving tools and movement options that allow you to approach the same area completely differently. By the end, you'll need to manipulate time, space, and your environment to solve puzzles that would be impossible at the start.

a simple yet revealing puzzle game w/ great narrative (and, surprisingly, tied seamlessly w/ its mechanics!) i'd say get the game w/o 2nd thought, despite these subtle flaws:

ui/ux feels like "mobile first": in a single turn, you can move onto an adjacent tile, or stay on the current tile and interact with another. in other games it'll be like, WASD to move, or hold shift during WASD to interact; some games employed left/right click to distinguish movement/action... in this game, it is tapping WASD vs holding WASD, which got wrongly interpreted quite a bit
mouse cursor isn't easily visible (thx to its semi-transparent color) when going to some "dark" zone of the map --- however, you can play the game keyboard-only or controller-only, but for me lazy brat, i like to use only just a trackpad on my right hand
game's map has branching paths w/ multiple entries to each sub-area, which quite suggests a metroidvania genre; however, you can only follow the standard level sequence ::sadge::
3 found this helpful
The hand-drawn art is catchy, and the puzzles are just as original. The game slowly introduces path-finding creatures who interfere with your attempts to clean up the garden levels. As their number grows, expect to feel a sense of chaos. It makes for a very strong, unusual flavor of puzzle mechanics. To be honest, it took me quite some time to like it —it's so frustrating to have woodsmen or miners messing up your plans, to feel the usual puzzle-games control seeping out of your hands. But the late game made it entirely worth it. Big thanks to the designer for delivering this daring gem.2 found this helpful
Absolutely love this game. Its a good enough puzzle game, with mechanics that start of very slow, but do get progressively trickier and become really interesting after a while, but what makes this game stand out is that it is more than just that. Gameplay, visuals, audio and story come together effortlessly and create something that that is at the same time part compelling visual novel, confounding puzzle game and a kind of soothing deeply relaxing experience.1 found this helpful
incredibly overlooked. such a wonderful relaxing adventure that takes a series of puzzles and somehow creatively weaves all puzzles into a massive world to explore. a world filled with quirky characters and unique personalities that stands out somehow in this oversaturated gaming landscape as highly original and unique. the qol is great here... both unlimited undos and a room reset. the controls are simple and intuitive, though require a bit of getting use to as you would accidentally cast spells instead of move... but thats why the undo button is there. I absolutely loooove the art here. the character design is so minimalist and unique... kind of like an experimental French visual novel called "cave! cave!". just beautiful. i seriously cant get enough, especially when stressed out. the puzzles are nav puzzles similar to hitman go, but are tile based rather than moving to set nodes on a visible waypoint line. this is a must buy. this dev deserves your time with this game. its soooo original, unique and engaging. the narrative and lore is sooooooooooo fun and intriguing... and ... let me stop gushing here... BUY THIS!
Very enjoyable, found myself stuck a few times. I love the design and aesthetic.
This is a beautiful game! I love the custom handdrawn art and animation and the magical fantasy storytelling. Very cool game concept and gameplay.
