✦ AI summary

Players describe Zack Y as a retro-styled arcade platformer with some entertaining moments and interesting enemy encounters, but it's severely hampered by poor controls, confusing input schemes, and uninspired pixel art. The game's difficulty often feels unfair due to enemy spawning issues and unbalanced mechanics, with most players finding the experience frustrating rather than engaging despite occasional fun sequences.

Zack Y is a template flip from Anamik Majumdar, who keeps reskinning the same lame GameMaker Studio game template and re-releasing it on Steam with a few minor changes. The GameMaker Studio template he keeps re-releasing is just a basic retro pixel (couldn't he rip off a template with proper graphics??) 2D top down/platformer stealth/action game. Here's some other results of his copy+paste school of "game development":

Haunted Jail: Alcatas
Ghost in the Barn House
Gaze at Maze
Smash Halloween Pumpkins: The Challenge
The Chills
Gregor Hills Haunted Hospital
Jaxon The Thief
House Number 666
My Haunted Doll
Axizon Labs: Zombies
The Haunted Exmone Theatre
Rescue Rina
The Haunted Tunnel
Heltons Haunted Hotel
Gaze At Maze
Ghost In The Barn House
Zack Y
These are all basically the exact same GameMaker Studio game template with a different skin and a couple of things changed. No professional effort was made in terms of game development, using a game construction kit requires no game development talent, and unsurprisingly produces products that have little to no value …

Zack Y is a retro-styled side-scrolling action platformer that fully embraces the design philosophy of classic arcade shooters while building a fast-paced science-fiction adventure around alien warfare, futuristic military conflicts, and relentless combat. Developed and published by Anamik Majumdar, the game feels deeply rooted in the era when platform shooters focused almost entirely on reflexes, stage memorization, and nonstop gameplay momentum rather than cinematic storytelling or complex progression systems. From the moment the game begins, it becomes clear that Zack Y is designed as a tribute to older arcade experiences where difficulty, precision, and persistence formed the core of the challenge. While the game carries obvious limitations in polish and production value, it compensates through enthusiasm, nostalgic charm, and a clear understanding of what makes retro side-scrolling shooters enjoyable. The story follows Zack Y, an alien warrior forced into a brutal conflict against dangerous hostile forces threatening entire regions through advanced military technology and aggressive invasions. The world itself feels heavily inspired by classic science-fiction arcade games whe…

This main character has goofy Princess Leia ears and the game itself is kinda fun in a "so broken it's hilarious" kind of way. It's not repetitive and there are some cool sequences. The final boss fight where you fight a scorpion with a woman's head is entertaining.

the art style for the characters in this game makes me consider some form of self harm in an attempt to evenly distribute the pain. the control instructions indicate the ability to use both the arrows and W, D and A but only one of those is the truth. I do appreciate the basic design of the stages. you are dropped into an arena with limited ammo and more than one enemy type. it's quite easy to spend all your ammo and end up defenseless so shoot wisely. I had to play 4 more minutes to write the review but ended up putting in around 9. the one thing I liked about the game turned out to not be true because all ammo is carried over between deaths and levels, so eventually you will have more than enough ammo to slam through nearly any encounter. I will redistribute my appreciation for the game to the change in challenges such as, boss fight, race to the end of the stage. the really bad thing about the race to the end of the stage challenge is that you get 25 seconds, 5 of those seconds are spent with a majority of the critical gameplay area obscured by a giant mission objective box reminding me that I only have 25 seconds to get to the end. so you end up just blindly hopping onto a coup…

Utter garbage. Horrible graphics, horrible sound, horrible gameplay, horrible level design. Walk left and right mashing the mouse button (you move with the keyboard but shoot with the mouse for some reason) and hope that the enemy dies before you do. Die because the game spawned an enemy on top of you. Restart. There's no cover, no platforms, nowhere to jump to...no point. only 51% of players made it to the second level. Why? Because the game is unplayable garbage.
