About Pentiment

✦ AI summary

Play as a clever illustrator investigating murders in 16th century Bavaria, where your choices reshape the fate of an entire community over twenty-five years. Uncover conspiracy and secrets through a stunningly hand-illustrated world inspired by Renaissance art, with branching consequences that ripple across generations.

From Obsidian, this game is a historical narrative-driven game focusing on character development, heavily stylized art, and choice-driven storytelling in early 16th century Bavaria. Players will play as Andreas Maler, a clever illustrator caught up in a series of murders in Tassing and Kiersau Abbey over the course of twenty five years. Players will be responsible for conducting their own investigation to decide the fate of the community, but each decision will have lasting consequences and inexorably draws Andreas closer to the center of an underlying conspiracy.

Illustrated world

Experience 16th century Europe as the master artists of the time saw them. Art inspired by great illuminated manuscripts and the earliest printed books becomes a living, breathing world in Pentiment.

Uncover mysteries

Choose different academic and social backgrounds and meet a colorful cast of characters as you discover the stories and secrets that lie within the small Bavarian town of Tassing and nearby Keirsau Abbey.

Impact a changing world

In an era of great religious and political change, each decision you make can have a profound impact on the community’s future. Find your own way through this turbulent time and see the consequences of your choices play out over generations.

✦ AI summary

Pentiment is praised by players for its exceptional writing, beautiful art style, and engaging storytelling that spans generations while weaving in genuine historical and religious detail. The game plays as a choice-driven narrative adventure with minigames and dialogue options that meaningfully affect the plot, though some players note it could benefit from quality-of-life improvements like fast travel and the ability to skip cutscenes. Players consistently describe it as a worthwhile and highly recommendable experience.

Such a great game, from the art, to the stories, characters, history, and actual gameplay. I love that you get to see characters and town through generations. Note that there are three acts, the first two of which play like a murder mystery. This game feels like an oldschool point and click game, but with walking. There is no inventory, combat, levels etc., instead most of what you is make dialogue choices that affect the plot, along with some minigames. I liked getting to pick background characteristics that unlock special dialogue options for the character at the beginning of each act. If I were to make improvements, I would suggest the ability to skip or fast-forward through cutscenes, the ability to run indoors, an optional fast travel system using the map, and more clarity on how the calculations for success/failure are determined when trying to convince other characters of things. Overall I hope to see more games inspired by Pentiment!

I really liked seeing this little village progress across generations and learning about the religious and feudal backgrounds. Fun game and a great way to learn about this time period.

Quite simply incredible, such a sublime work I struggle to put it into words. The art, the writing, the love of history and writing, it's all just wondrous. Almost a bittersweet game to play as it makes you realise how much better the state of gaming could be. Still, highly recommend! ps I'm busily trying to work out how I can work this into a history lesson for my students!

A good point and click story. It's also great that there are many different narrative choices which will drastically change the story and ending. Solid quick game.
