About Nimbatus - The Space Drone Constructor

✦ AI summary

Nimbatus - The Space Drone Constructor is a physics-based game where you design and build custom drones from 75+ parts to explore destructible planets, mine resources, and battle enemies across a campaign, sandbox, and competitive modes. Create anything from simple combat drones to fully automated contraptions with sensors and logic, then test them against procedurally generated worlds and other players' creations.

You are the Captain of the Nimbatus – the biggest mobile drone factory ever made. Design your own unique drones to explore a physics-based universe. Survive by shooting your way through completely destructible planets in different biomes,
compete against autonomous drones built by other players or enjoy complete creative freedom in the sandbox.

Let your imagination run wild

Choose from more than 75 physically simulated parts. The drone construction workshop enables full creative freedom.

Explore three different game modes

  • Survival campaign: Pick one of six diverse captains, navigate the universe and grow your arsenal while facing overwhelming odds.
  • Sandbox: Get creative with unlimited power. Adjust game parameters to your liking, create your own challenges or conquer the universe with endless resources at your disposal.
  • Competitive arenas: Show your engineering skills to the world. Battle other players in several arenas such as Sumo, Racing, Brawl & Catch.

Mine entire planets

You’ll encounter countless procedurally generated planets that are fully destructible and rich in resources, each with their own unique properties, climate zones and enemies.

Automate your drone to the fullest

Take the additional challenge and construct fully automated space drones by combining
sensors and logic parts. Use your inventions in singleplayer or measure your programming skills against other players.

Choose your weapon and upgrade your ship

Fight with endless weapon combinations in the campaign or build your own custom
weapons from scratch in the weapon workshop by researching the tech tree. Upgrade your mothership to aid you on your mission and shift the odds in your favour.

✦ AI summary

Players praise the game's unique building system and sandbox gameplay with roguelike elements, though some find it genuinely challenging and atmospheric. Common complaints center on the game's roguelike structure forcing difficult choices between rewards, balance issues that can feel unfair, and a mismatch between marketing and actual gameplay—some expected a progression-based building game but got more of an FTL-like deck-building experience instead. The developers have stated the game is complete and won't receive major updates beyond critical fixes, which frustrates those hoping for balance

Not really a programming game. Automation options are limited to logic gates. Components have limited automation options. For $5.00 it was fine but I wouldn't pay more than that.

There is not nearly enough automation in this game to justify why it was being being sold in the Steam Programming Fest. The automation is treated as an afterthought, only introduced in the "advanced" tutorial, and only one out of the seven or eight starter setups includes automation parts, and it's treated as a super-advanced optional mode that even locks your keyboard and forces you to automate. Why can't the regular starters also get automation parts? Because all the rest of the starter setups play exactly like a normal top-down space sim - fly around with inertia, shoot enemies, mine resources. Like Escape Velocity...but liner, without the open world.

Only briefly fun. There's very little to do once you've made a decent drone, and I don't like the way the drone pieces are connected with weird stringy goo.

I played it in "usual" style in the beginning and found it too repetitive after some time. But because I purchased it during Steam Programming Fest, I was curious what part of the game is related to programming, except a few logical components. Then I realized, there is a Programmer captain class, which disables any input for drone during the mission and you need to build the drone for completely for fully automated mission completion. This could get quite challenging at times, but for me it added that depth which I needed to complete the game at least once.

Pros: - Building drones is fun. - Logic gates are fun. Cons: - The missions are repetitive. - The enemies are repetitive. - The maps are repetitive. - The grind is boring. Overall: I give this game about 7 out of 10. Note: It has so much unused potential. A proper storyline and less grind can push the score to 9/10.
