I never played the original release, but everybody seemed pretty content with Fruitbearer (FB), making me curious how it improved on the basic idea. Having made multiple attempts at it, I don't really get the appeal.
Gameplay
Despite calling itself a deckbuilder, there's absolutely no point in that feature. Each item you can drop into the pit is represented by a card, but it's immediately converted into the actual shape of the item once you use it, defeating the entire point of having a card system at all. If this were my only complaint, it might be kind of silly, yet there's plenty of other issues in how the game is structured. Whenever you start a n…
FOR MORE CARD AND BOARD GAMES FOLLOW US CARD GAME KING
Fruitbearer is rough around the edges, but it has potential. If you played Dogpile (we highly suggest you do), the gameplay will be quite familiar with a few roguelike differences. If not, it boils down to throwing stuff in the pit with the intent to merge identical items to gain points and advance to the next level. Simple, but it has depth. Just like in Dogpile, the core gameplay is fun and deckbuilding/upgrading has strategic weight to it. That said, it lacks polish on many fronts. In an effort to make some bosses more animated, their animation inadvertently blocks the view of your screen, so you can't even see what you're doing. The game also forces you to click through NPC's repeated intro monologues (instead of using speech bubbles) every time you visit a shop. The balance isn't great either. The pit height upgrade is absolutely critical to buy, so your choice in pathing is mostly predetermined. At the time of writing, some boss mechanics are also downright unfair. Content is also on the low side, because many things n…

This is a nice twist to the merge game genre. If you enjoy Suika but wanted a little more then you should try this out. It took me a solid 6hrs for me to get my first clear. Figuring out what works together and how to build was fun. Whilst I have a good amount of understanding. I'm still learning after 12hrs what other combinations work with one another. The gameplay is more than just merging fruit. There is deck building, space management and, combo merging. I can get clears without doing math. For those who want to min-max for rewards you can be the architect and stack things for huge rewards. The learning curve is not steep but, the variety of cards offers a lot of reply value. If you've never played a roguelike or a merge game before, I'd recommend this game as a good starting point.

I've only played about an hour into it (not including the time I've played the demo) so far, but it's been pretty great! I can see several different strategies I could use to try to build my deck, with the game offering many different ways to improve your chances of winning (Such as increasing the amount of space you have to work with, adding special effects to fruit so they provide more benefits when played, choosing to take "artifact" cards that can't merge but offer some other lasting benefit in exchange for taking up space on the board when played, permanently sacrificing cards to increase the amount of cards you can play each turn, etc.) Besides the many options you have throughout your run, the game also keeps things fresh by having a variety of enemies that interfere with your board in different ways. I'd recommend checking it out to anyone whose curious, it's pretty fun, and the price is pretty low even when it's not on sale! (And if you're still not sure, I'd recommend at least giving the demo a try before dismissing it, it may change your mind!!)

Super fun little game that's addicting and easy to get the hang of! Only downside is that some of the bosses are nearly impossible to beat, and the void power from the bosses is way overpowered and makes those fights ridiculously frustrating with how often the bosses drop them in.
