✦ AI summary

ArcaniA is a linear action game that players find enjoyable enough as a standalone experience, with fluid combat and decent exploration in the first half, though it suffers from technical issues, a poorly developed story, and significant polish problems in the latter half. Most players recommend approaching it without expectations of a true Gothic sequel, and several note it struggles with bugs and performance that can severely impact the experience.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really didn't hate this. In fact, I might have liked it more than Gothic 3, which was trying to pretend it was an open world RPG but really wasn't. Here they didn't even try. It's a completely linear hack 'n slash/third-person shooter with a dumb ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ story that makes no sense. The only thing it has in common with the third game is that you--the alleged hero--is a whiny, angry, yelling douchebag who runs into every encounter immediately shouting demands at every NPC. It has absolutely nothing to do with Gothics 1/2, however the game needs to remind you it's Gothic by wheeling out the (VERY VERY OLD) men who made up the side characters in the first game. As a linear action game, it's not unfun. Melee combat feels fluid (sorta), and the archery/magic is fine. You're just blastin'. Crafting is stupid, it's a bullet list of things you just make. The skill tree is also a spreadsheet with boring, lame perks. The best part about the game for me is that it's mercifully short. 22 hours for me, and I take my time. I know everyone wants their 100 hour open world RPGs, but sometimes shorter is better. Especially when the game isn't…

Playing this game as Arcania (not Gothic) was a fun experience for me. At least the first half of the game is rich in exploration of smaller hubs and the story drives the progress well enough. After Castle Silverlake the tide turned a bit. Less rewarding exploration, more and more fights, but still enough motivation to finish the main storyline. It really felt rushed and unpolished in the later parts and this is how I should have played it. I liked the graphics and both nature and city motives create a lot of postcard motives. Sometimes the lighting goes bad on characters or other weird effects happen, but this did not bother my gameplay. Finding the hidden objects throughout the world is a real pain without a guide. Otherwise the game felt quite easy. Crafting was never necessary and that also made most of the objects and chest rewards not really elevant, especially later on. Anyway, a solid RPG experience.
