✦ AI summary

Riven (1997) is praised by players as a superior follow-up to Myst that rewards exploration and logical thinking with well-designed puzzles and immersive world-building, though many strongly recommend playing this original version over the modern remake, which they feel changes the puzzles and loses the game's distinctive charm. Players appreciate that the game encourages note-taking and engagement without requiring excessive complexity, making it accessible to those willing to think through problems systematically.

play this one not the new one because the two most interesting parts of this game are what was possible with CGI in 1997 and the type of "easier for a smart kid to figure out than a jaded videogame playing adult" type puzzles which they completely changed/ruined with the remake

Riven is so much better than Myst, it's not even close. It rewards you for engaging with its world realistically, and everything is well interwoven. Play this original version instead of the remake, which changes lots of things, makes the puzzles less meaningful, and has no aura.

A huge step up from the original! Myst may be somewhat overrated from today's perspective, but playing it in preparation for this is truly worth it. I have played the originals of both games and watched gameplay of the remakes. Riven should be fun in either version (huge changes between versions making sure the remake is equally as playable as the original even with the new perspective), but when it comes to Myst, I would strongly recommend the more faithful remaster "Masterpiece Edition" (or the original itself) over the remake, because the remake changes gameplay/perspective without changing the puzzles, making it very easy to miss things and leaving the game a lot harder than originally intended.
