Heroes Rise: The Prodigy

Absolutely awful. A master class in deprotagonizing a protagonist and taking away player agency time and time again. None of the "twists" are surprising or entertaining. I kind of wanted to vomit when I said I didn't want to have sex with another heroine and the game forced me to anyway - you can definitely tell this was written by a sexist. I wouldn't recommend anyone play this game, even for free.

[h1]GENERIC SUPERHERO STORY[/h1] I'm someone who likes to check out works-in-progress in the Interactive Fiction genre, and the superhero subgenre has some genuinely enjoyable works out there. So I thought it was finally time to check out something that was actually finished. That's how I ended up trying the Heroes Rise trilogy. Not gonna lie, I ended up being very disappointed with The Prodigy. It's not an awful game with no redeeming qualities, but it doesn't do anything particularly well. For something that's supposed to be the beginning of an entire trilogy, it doesn't do a very good job of making me want to play the rest. As I said, it's not the worst game ever, but [b]it's also not something I can recommend[/b]. It might be a decent way to kill some time if you're desperate for superhero-themed interactive fiction, but other than that, it's probably not worth your time. [b]World[/b] The world of Heroes Rise is very generic. The story takes place in the fictional Millennia City in America, which is the main place for superpowered people to live. Why there, and why America? Obviously, because they were smart enough to be the first to embrace superpowered individuals. We hear…

A clever little gamebook-style story, set in a future comic book-y world. You take actions that increase various stats, and your later actions are informed by what directions you've "exercised" those stats. There's a surprising amount of intrigue, and more than a few twists. Although the ultimate ending is set, the choices you make along the way do matter. And if you enjoy it, it's the beginning of a story that continues in, like, half a dozen sequels.

Most of the choices don't matter. Not worth the time I put in and I didn't put in much. About 8 chapters in I felt like I was just witnessing someone else's narrative and found the "romance" really forced. You literally have to shut down the romance three times before it registers. TL/DR bad book, choice no matter.

An interesting superherogame, not that different from the standart superhero-story, but well made. Still, it suffers from some of the general choice of games flaws like forced character interaction, scripted defeats to advance the story and rather forced love-interest. It seems also somewhat biased agaist defensive and lawless builds, so playing a straight up hero is presented as the golden way, even as there are other options. Not enough different outcomes for choices. But the writting is superb and really engaging, so i dont mind the flaws to much. Edit: I still recommend the game, i do not recommend the trilogy. Its to much of a sadist show to enjoy. The everyone dumps on the mc and they struggel agaist all odds was fine in this game, but not so much when it happend constanley in every other game. That just negates choices and carthasis. Also, if you dont play as the ultimate and perfect hero, it will go worse for you and the game will constantley call you out. This is frustrating, because after how much s_it the MC goes through, they are absolutley justified in hating people. If you dont share the authors views on heroism and other political stuff, you will not enjoy this.
