About Swordbreaker The Game

Through the dense fog our hero noticed a dark silhouette of a dark castle. Eventually his old rain-soaked map brought him to his target. He didn't have anything with him except for his favorite sword and remainings of an old armor with an unusual device – a sword-breaker. The hero looked around and stepped on the castle bridge...

This game is about a hero who, as fate would have it, finds himself in an abandoned castle. There will be many obstacles on his way to the treasure hidden somewhere inside, with most remarkable adversaries he will have to face and mysteries to unravel. All this to receive his well-earned reward in the end!

"Swordbreaker The Game" gives you a rare opportunity to find yourself in interactive fiction, where each player has their own storyline to develop. Every action or decision will have an effect on how the story unfolds and how it all ends. Some moves you make will change your character's karma, and others can lead you to the darkest corners of the castle, so be careful! Because any step you take may turn out to be the last one!

Main features of the game:

- A compelling totally non-linear game story
- Various endings
- A huge mysterious castle
- Lots of exciting locations and events
- Impressive enemies and inhabitants of the castle
- Absolutely stunning artwork
- Achievement system

Swordbreaker is a Russian visual novel which made me think of the old Fighting Fantasy or Choose-your-own-adventure books. The interface was very clumsy which was a feat in itself for this simple genre. There were sudden deaths with no warning whatsoever. It all felt very random and arbitrary. To progress was not really a question of making logical choices but mostly of luck with trial and error, and then remembering what you did on further runs. As an example of the nonsense, if you tapped a pipe at the blacksmith's instead of going to another room, it triggered a nuclear explosion. Really. To be fair, you could make three fatal mistakes before it was game over. Attractive drawn panels, lots of them, which was the redeeming feature that kept me playing. In terms of story, it felt rushed and like a weird mishmash of fantasy cliches, pop-culture references and sci-fi trappings. The writing was subpar and badly translated from Russian. I've seen worse, but writing being the most importang thing in a visual novel, I cannot recommend this.

I found Swordbraker an entertaining, "short", fun and "light" gaming experience. The "game" is a minimum-text "choose your path comic". I wouldn't call it "book" (like Lone Wolf game-books) because there is minimum (to none) novel-writing-story here. The game is actually 333 pictures, and a "select-1-out-of-three options" web connecting them, so that the gamer sets the "path" (sequence of pictures/events) the hero takes. Only way to figure out the correct selections "code" to reach the end-of-the-castle is "try-and-error" : 2-3-1-2 = Death ... Lets try again. (note: the hero has 3 lives per run) BUT, death pictures are the humorous element of the game that kept me going and that makes me give a positive review :-) I couldn't hold back a smile and the thought "this is the lamest death I have seen on a game", when the hero opened a closet overstuffed with sharp swords, resulting on them dropping on his head, pointing out a Fatality. :-) So I recommend the game, at the price you decide is worth for 333 pictures and 999 lines of text. But my personal opinion about the statements on the game storepage is: - "Impressive enemies and inhabitants of the castle" : Nah... I have seen …

Swordbreaker The Game is a deliberately old-school interactive fiction experience that embraces the spirit of classic choose-your-own-adventure books and translates it into a richly illustrated digital format. Developed and published by DuCats Games Studio, the game places narrative choice above all else, asking players to navigate a dangerous, mysterious castle where curiosity is both the primary driver of progress and the most common cause of death. It is a title that values discovery, consequence, and replayability far more than mechanical complexity, and it commits fully to that identity. From the outset, Swordbreaker establishes a tone of uncertainty and risk. You step into the role of a lone adventurer entering a fog-shrouded fortress armed with little more than a sword and a peculiar device known as the swordbreaker. There is no lengthy exposition or tutorial to ease you in; instead, the game immediately begins presenting choices that can lead to success, unexpected encounters, or abrupt failure. This design philosophy reinforces the idea that survival is never guaranteed and that knowledge, not power, is the most valuable resource you can acquire. Gameplay is almost entir…

https://youtu.be/c-NBp2H1B1Q Taking the wrong approach to narrative structure focusing on 'no wrong' instead of 'yes and' players are required to make coin flip choices until they memorize enough to progress.
