About Knights of the Road

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom of Rockwall, strong and prosperous, and ruled by a king loved and respected by all. But soon a plight befell the kingdom: a curse struck the queen and put her in a deep and dreamless slumber. All the kingdom's healers and sorcerers tried their trade, but no one could wake her from her eternal sleep. Distraught and desperate, the king himself turned to dark sorcery to find a cure for his beloved. But the dark occult is subtle and trecherous. It blackened king's heart more with each passing day and soon the dark forces possessed him whole. The kingdom of Rockwall began to fade into darkness..
You play as Fred, an outlaw and a brigand. Together with his faithful compainion, a beautiful fairy Aiwa, they roam the country roads, robbing the rich and ignoring the poor.

Like all fairies, Aiwa is magical and thus can transform into a magical shield imbued with magic, which Fred can protect himself with or throw at enemies. Thanks to Aiwa's magic, the magical shield returns to Fred like a boomerang. Because magic! Those two are constantly on the road in search of another booty, but unbeknownst to them a grand and perilous adventure lies ahead...

Use your shield to attack annoying enemies and deflect their shots.

Slide down on the shield to gain momentum and perform a long jump.

You can also use your shield to push off of an enemy or a projectile to reach certain places. Some obstacles need even more creative approach. Poor Aiwa!

But there's more to the game than mashing buttons. There's also a captivating story, unfolded through in-game dialogues and cut scenes.

You will also collect gold coins, gold bars and pouches, which you'll spend at shops on armor and on sorcerers who will bring you back from the dead at safe points.

The soundtrack is done in 8-bit style with tunes inspired by Irish folk music.

💰 THIS is what you call a game properly inspired by NES titles. Fun, inventive, not too hard or easy, an exciting adventure. Original mechanics and secrets, partially inspired by «Duck Tales». The controls require a little getting used to, but it's quite comfortable. The levels are colorful, large and interesting to explore. The checkpoint placement is very convenient. Funny references, good bosses and useful skills. There is an element of tricky puzzles, and with the exception of a couple of overly complicated platforming moments before the finale, they aren't stressful. A nice game, from which some similar indie projects should learn game design and the right balance of difficulty.

If you're a fan of the late 8-bit era of consoles, this is a platformer for you. It has that pixel art and chiptune charm that reminds me of simpler times. The level design and platforming is mostly a good time, though I certainly had a handful of absolute frustrating moments. But hey, I suck at games. So it's cool.

Knights of the Road is a pretty solid puzzle platformer, but it has some quirks. The initial gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Shovel Knight but it certainly has an identity of its own. Really smooth gameplay, good music, great 8 bit graphics, and mostly solid level design and fun bosses. This game does have a somewhat interesting design quirk with how gold is used. You pay a small amount of gold to activate the various checkpoints in the game. However, you also need gold to have access to most of the alternate abilities in the game as well as the various health upgrades. In my time playing, I paid for every checkpoint and only had enough for the 2 alt abilities you have to pay for plus 1 of the 3 health upgrades. In theory, you can sacrifice some checkpoints in order to save yourself up more money to get the various upgrades throughout the game. There's a certain risk/reward system there that I can appreciate. However, maybe it's just me personally, but I would've just preferred to have normal checkpoints and pay for the upgrades as I go through the game. You still have to get a ton of treasure chests to reasonably pay for the upgrades anyways, so it's not like you would be gett…

Decent platformer. Not as difficult as Shovel Knight, but not as long as The Messenger. Fits the bill nicely.
