Mahokenshi - The Samurai Deckbuilder

Easily recommended for fans of deckbuilders, turn-based tactics, and ninja/samurai. Theme is well done, good variety of missions and enemies, upgrades, characters play differently, exploration and shrines let you adjust your build better than most others in the genre.

It's a turn-based card-based combat game on a hexagonal grid map. You can choose from four characters, each with different cards that allow for different strategies (for example, dealing high damage, using poison, high mobility, etc.). There are various missions to undertake: you start with a basic deck, and on the map you can find additional cards, upgrade them, purchase temporary cards, and improve your stats (strength: to deal more damage; defense: to take less damage; energy: to move and play cards; increase the number of cards you can draw; increase your health). After each mission (even failed ones), you earn experience points that allow you to level up your character (unlocking new cards) and purchase upgrades on three skill trees. I enjoyed completing the missions (I especially appreciated the timed ones, which required careful planning of your moves), but none of them are particularly difficult (I would have liked to see at least two or three difficulty levels). I appreciated how the terrain type (plains, hills, mountains) profoundly impacts gameplay. In particular, I found the corrupted terrain to be a great idea. Good cardplay and tactical board stuff going on. Voice acting and cutscenes really add to the theme of the game. Recommended
