Seonbi : Scholar of Joseon

An acceptable side scroller action that's greatly undermined by its short length, lack of expansive features and weird story rummaged from existing tales. In the waning days of the 16th century, Joeson, old Korea, defended itself against repeated Japanese invasion, "thanks to the heroic efforts of many." The art displayed with this sentence features exclusively Korean soldiers and completely ignores the efforts made by hundred thousand Ming Chinese troops that were essential to Joeson's defense. Indoctrinatory narrative alert. After the war, the suffering of the common people continued, with corrupt officials and their neighbors who resorted to banditry exacerbating their pain. And one Seonbi with mysterious intent, starts his journey to the capital arming himself with a bow to "address the turmoil." Seonbis, like the title of the game says, were primarily scholars in higher social caste. An action side-scroller that is great fun with a bit of a bittersweet feel to it. Got hooked early on and before I knew it I had spent hours grinding and levelling up my character. Nice art, great music, fun abilities, varied enemies and overall a very enjoyable game.

Seonbi: Scholar of Joseon is a compact side-scrolling action roguelite that gains much of its personality from a setting rarely explored in games. Developed and published by Team ETTU, it takes place in Korea following the devastation of the Imjin War. Rather than presenting the Joseon period as a purely historical drama, the game blends its historical backdrop with supernatural threats and fast-paced action. Bandits, corrupt forces, remnants of invading armies, and monsters have contributed to the disorder spreading across the country, leaving an unnamed scholar to travel toward Hanyang and help restore some measure of stability. The protagonist's choice of weapon immediately gives the combat a distinctive character. Instead of building the entire experience around conventional sword fighting, the bow serves as the primary weapon. Maintaining distance, repositioning, aiming attacks, and choosing when to use special abilities are therefore central to surviving encounters.
