Ancestors Legacy

Had this sitting in my library for ages and finally played it. Pretty fun overall, but kinda hard if you're new to RTS games. It's also mentally draining, so I needed a break after some chapters. Mostly played campaign and Skirmish, didn't touch multiplayer. Some achievements are easy, others feel almost impossible, but finally getting the hard ones is really satisfying.

There's nothing I hate more than when I buy a real-time strategy game with it promising me something like, 'a squad-based real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics. Inspired by medieval European history' or '(a game that) combines resource management and base building with large-scale, squad-based battles across vast battlefields' only to find myself guiding a handful of units through some stealth puzzle missions over and over and over. I hate stealth puzzles and I don't know why every RTS game under the sun insists on having them. The developers must know that this isn't fun because that's not what they advertise in the game's description. They don't say 'lead a handful of units in a multitde of stealth missions where fighting is heavily punished' do they. And they don't do it because they know that that's boring. So why don't they focus the gameplay on the parts of the game that they KNOW are fun and that they deliberately describe in the game descriptions?

Ancestors Legacy is a solid medieval RTS with great atmosphere and satisfying tactical combat. Vikings, Slavs, Anglo-Saxons, raids, village capture and brutal battles all fit together really well. I especially like that positioning, flanking and terrain actually matter instead of just throwing huge armies at the enemy. The combat feels heavy, the setting is dark and authentic, and the campaign is enjoyable if you like medieval history. Not the deepest RTS ever made, but definitely a very fun one. Recommended for fans of medieval strategy.
