Among The Whispers - Provocation

I really want to like this game, but I just can't. The developer made all the bad choices compared to the first game. There is only one location to investigate, and it is huge yet it feels empty. The ghosts all feel the same, they are procedurally generated, they don't have unique stories or characteristics. It's just a randomly generated thing from a limited pool of options. The ghost levelling system is way worse than the activity mechanic from CSPPI. The jumpscares are not scary, they are just annoying. The paranoia system and timed investigations are both unnecessary filler content. The focus of the story shifted from the individual ghosts to the story of the house, but it all just ended up being a boring loop of leveling the ghost, releasing the ghost, repeat. The only good change compared to that game is that we can finally use both hands, and carry things in a backback. The only notable new mechanic, provocations, exists. That's it, it isn't good, isn't bad, it just is. I can not recommend this game, when there are other games which do these exact things but better. I enjoy this game; I keep coming back to it. The only things I dislike about it are that you have to keep going back to the Lobby in order to check some background information on the possible suspects. Wth? That girl has a tablet, probably a phone with access to the internet too, so why can't she check it there? It's a huge manor, and I love that, but it's just wayyyy too annoying to have to go all the way back to the Lobby from the 4th floor just to check background information on ghosts. Also, why can't that camcorder have more than just 5 slots of storage? It's not like we're recording super long videos; they're just a couple of seconds long... They can't take up that much storage. Some room locations and causes of death can be quite repetitive... Thank God they allow us to turn off that Nerve thing, 'cause we're playing as a professional ghost hunter. Shouldn't she, of all people, be capable of keeping her cool around ghosts? Anyways, the concept is good, and the manor is just beautiful. I personally prefer its predecessor, Paranormal P.I., but I still think this one is worth the money, both for its concept and to support the devs too.

A pseudo sequel to Conrad Stevenson's Paranormal P.I., this time playing as an associate of Conrad's known as Stephanie who can apparently get ghosts to more directly react to her questions than Conrad can? This time it's her versus this HUGE mansion. Over and over again for a sort of weird experience that has gotten a lot of flak, and it's for a reason. You start with a tutorial covering the basics of investigating a ghost, using your inventory, your hands, and it's not very difficult. It's similar to the Paranormal P.I. loop but you basically need to release the spirit the same night. You finish that tutorial, see your results... and your only option is to return to the main menu. Every time you select continue on the main menu after that, the mansion is refreshed for a new spirit or two for you to investigate... with constant changing family names and history OF said family. Meanwhile, the mansion itself has a single history you gather through "Chapters" worth of archive evidence you find. I like the latter thing... but the former gets distracting. I really wanted to love this, I tried really hard. But as of 2026, I have yet to actually play the game beyond just the tutorial; 25hrs of just trying to do the tutorial and get past it - because of all the bugs. I can't be overly specific because there's always something, but it's really unfortuate. Most recently, I booted up and finally finished the tutorial and got to exploring the mansion. Howver, nothing was happening - I got the cues that there were specific pieces of information I needed to collect in the form of items. I looked at guides just to make sure I was looking at the right things; but I wasn't able to pick them up and get the item to register as info required to move forward. Upon restarting the save file, I went to restart the tutorial and I got locked into the laptop email screen. Would not let me back out, no matter what I clicked on in the email, I couldn't back out after selecting "Dining Room". I had to Alt F4 out of the game because I was stuck. There has been more situations like these, that have made me restart the save file and redo the tutorial, enough for me to log 25hrs total but without having actually played the game any further; and it's a sha…

Kind of janky and runs weird. Needs better hitboxes and direction; its super confusing. A lot of the controls seem to fight you so you keep messing up item placement. I've 100%'ed the first game. It was rough but also really fun once you knew what you were doing. This? This isn't good and I'm sad cause I want to like it. I can't tell if you're supposed to start with all new ghosts every time or if it's just kind of how it's set up. I had a woman ghost in the Art room and ended up getting knocked out while setting up the camcorder. I was then stuck in the camcorder setup menu and could not put it down so I had to restart. I get the Art room again but this time it was a man. The time limit on it goes a bit too fast in my opinion and I can't tell how well I did at the end of the round.

I loved CSPPI and was SUPER excited about this game though, like many others it feels like the "pilot" game and not a sequel. Only one location to investigate, the actual investigations themselves are random and incoherent. The stress and timed elements make no positive benefit whatsoever, it purely stands to annoy the player, which is never the right choice. The optimisation of this game is pretty poor too, I have a very high end PC and I get stutters and hitching all over the place, which should not be the case at all with this sort of game. The key binds on PC are really strange and illogical, for example, to exit a menu, sometimes it is tab, sometimes it is esc and others it is a click - You should always be able to use esc to back out of a menu. Despite expecting you to release more than one entity per session, the second spirit ALWAYS takes an age to get to the stage of level 5/chimes to actually be able to release them. I just finished a game (my last!) where I identified the spirit, had the special item ready and spent 20 mins constantly interacting with the ghost, having visual and audio interactions constantly and it never got to level 5.
