A Date in the Park

A short but really enjoyable mystery adventure with a great atmosphere and some unexpected twists. I loved the pixel art, especially how it was combined with real photographs of people, which gave the game a very distinctive feel. Simple, unusual, and nicely done!

A short point-and-click horror game that starts off feeling surprisingly normal. You’re just exploring the park and talking to people, with nothing particularly alarming going on. The big reveal is genuinely shocking. The contrast between the normality of the setting and suddenly coming across something so horrible makes the moment much more effective. It’s also worth translating the gardener’s text if you don't speak Portuguese, as there’s more to what he says than you might expect. It’s not long, and completely free, but it manages to create a really unsettling atmosphere in that short time. Definitely worth playing if you enjoy short horror games with a darker story.

I arrive expecting a normal date, but things very quickly start feeling wrong. I like how the game does not immediately explain what is happening. Instead, I am left walking around the park, talking to people and trying to work out why everything feels so strange. That slow build makes the later parts much more effective. The setting is probably my favourite thing about it. The game uses real photographs of Tapada das Necessidades in Lisbon as its backgrounds, then puts the characters and objects over the top using old style digitised graphics. It gives the park a very strange look because I am walking around somewhere that feels like a real place while everything happening inside it feels increasingly unnatural. I also like the language problem because Lou does not speak Portuguese, so some conversations become confusing in a way that actually fits the story instead of feeling like a random obstacle.
