Waking up every day as the forest's only protector is not an easy job for anyone. There's not only every animal's personal problem a gnome has to deal with — as mysteriously dark, unprecedented things start happening in the forest; the source of which no one really understands. Fear, escaping and destruction taint the previously peaceful life of the animals. Seemingly only one can stop this — but what can a single gnome really do to save the world?A Most Extraordinary Gnome is a short, narrative-driven game, which combines challenging and unique 2D action with complex storytelling. You control a small gnome, who uses his hat to defeat the dangers he encounters in increasingly intense stages.

A world made out of paper
As a rare sight in gaming, the entire adventure comes alive with the help of paper. Anything you see in the game is made by hand, stacking layers of colorful paper on each other to create this flat, but heavily detailed aesthetic the game. Pros - Fantastic art-style made out of (recycled) paper. - Charming characters and dialog. - Very challenging (at least to me) but certaintly engaging platforming-bullet-hell style gameplay. Essentially there is just one mechanic; when you are wearing a hat you are invincible but each contact with a projectile will knock your hat off and you also need to throw your hat to inflict damage leaving you vunerable. It sounds basic but the game mixes it up quite well and its very short anyway so doesn't get repetive. Also between the game stages you can explore your home and talk to animals and there is small mini-stories revealed by doing so. - There are difficultly options such as increasing the number of lives which was much appreciated. - A poignant underlying story. Cons - Very short but argubly the price reflects the scope and I can imagine the development effort was signficant. Overall highly recomended.
Once upon a time there was a gnome who used his hat as a Sonic ring. The end. In all seriousness, this 2D boss rush game may present itself as an adventure fable book following a gnome destined to help a crew of animals in need by clashing into various treacherous creatures. However, such fighting involves throwing its hat which is also the thing that makes you invincible in quite the extraordinary way (see what I did there). Be careful if you lose it then as you have a limited number of hearts while vulnerable and each fight can be quite long, more so if you’re not used to these kinds of games and the first boss kicks your ass.. Fortunately, once you’re able to get past it there isn’t as big of a difficulty spike until the end which can be reached in around 30-60 minutes depending on your skill. If that’s not enough, additional difficulty modes and achievements can extend the runtime by making you go out of your way for some secret (and sometimes giggling) lines of dialogue. Meanwhile the old folk aesthetics and violin tracks are quite welcomed to make the journey feel more in tune with the story. Either way, I’d have liked if the tutorial stage gave you more ways to mast…

A pleasant, brief, lovely game. Hyper-challenging if you play traditionally, but even with the helpful "invincible" mode, it still take some participation and effort to complete. Highly recommend for the alluring fabric art style.
