A Small Robot Story

(My playtime shows 0.2 hours because this game crashed my computer when I tried to load it through Steam, so I had to play it by running the exe in wine.) ((That was strike 1.)) This game sucks. It's like a Chinese bootleg of Megaman with its boring and repetitive level designs, as well as sketchy code stability. The only decent part of this game are the boss fights, but it isn't worth slogging through these dull, depressing levels to challenge them after dying. And to add insult to injury, this game has limited continues. Not even the actual Megaman has limited continues, and even if it did, Megaman has entertaining levels that could make up for having to play them over and over. I won't even give this a partial pass for being a free to play game, since it was originally five dollars and only got made free when it stopped selling. If I could get Megaman on Wii Virtual Console for five dollars back in the day, I feel comfortable comparing this to Megaman. This game may not steal a few dollars, but it will steal an hour. Spend your time somewhere else.

A Small Robot Story is a small retro adventure platformer that I found pretty easy to get into. I play as Rae, a little robot who suddenly activates without knowing why, so I have to travel through different areas and work out what happened. The game takes me through forests, factories, caves and laboratories, and there is a bigger story behind the simple platforming than I expected. It has a very clear old school feel, but it still tries to give me a reason to keep moving forward rather than just throwing me through a collection of levels. The platforming is simple, but I think that works in the game's favour. I am jumping over obstacles, dealing with enemies and using power ups as I make my way through the different areas. The gameplay is described as having NES style challenge, and I can definitely feel that influence in the way some sections expect me to pay attention to my movement and timing. The controls are not overloaded with abilities, which means I can concentrate on getting comfortable with the basics instead of learning a huge moveset. A VERY basic platformer. Controls are wacky, as well as hitboxes. Cinematics are unskipable, and if you don't finish in one sitting, you have to restart from zero. No settings menu. Pixel "art" poorly executed. Not worth your time.
