About Alastrius
Launch your heavily armed Star-Fighter into devastating battles across the galaxy in an intense on-the-rails space shooter. Take the role of a skilled fighter pilot assigned to the Interstellar Battleship Alastrius, the only capital ship still fighting for the Republic following a sudden coup d'état. Your mission is simple; blast a path through numerous enemy strongholds, liberate the capital world Velora and restore the Republic. However the enemy forces are vast and they will throw every weapon they have in your path.
From lush green forests to vast deserts, explore bottomless icy glaciers and broken volcanic mining worlds. Plot a course through 16 different planets, space stations, nebulae and other hazardous locations as you guide the Battleship Alastrius back to its home world. With numerous different missions and storyline developments it will take many playthroughs to discover everything. The Battleship Alastrius carries a diverse range of playable Star-Fighters from nimble, lightly armed ships to hulking goliaths. When a Star-Fighter is lost in combat its gone for the rest of the campaign so choose your fighters for each mission wisely. The game begins with three different Star-Fighters with a further seven that can be unlocked.
Each Star-Fighter is equipped with multiple Laser Cannons able to shred through enemies, even at long range. If more firepower is needed powerful homing Missiles can make short work of even the toughest targets and if that's not enough the Star-Fighters arsenal of Bombs can devastate everything in a vast area.
The devious Imperium have usurped almost the entire Republic military and will throw hordes of forces at you including drones, fighters, tanks, boats, turrets, mines and traps. Find your enemies weakpoints to destroy them efficiently and rack up impression mission high scores. Can you earn a Gold Medal in every Mission?Saving the most insane superweapons to the end of every mission these hulking war machines will test your skills. Depending on your path a different boss may be poised to strike.
Familiarise yourself with the Star-Fighters controls and weapons systems by taking on the Training Simulator. You have been assigned a Dispatch Officer onboard the battleship Alastrius; Rahalla who is fully voice acted will be your loyal companion guiding your Star-Fighter through the Training Simulator. Rahalla will also guide you through all the campaign missions, sharing developments as the civil war unfolds.
The game contains 40 Steam Achievements if you are looking for a wide array of additional challenges. Achievements are also tracked independently within each of the games six Save Files so friends or family with access to your Steam Account can still go Achievement hunting themselves even if you have unlocked them already on Steam. Alastrius offers full Keyboard-and-Mouse controls allowing you to shoot using the Mouse with pinpoint accuracy. If you prefer the Gamepad get ready for a classic Twin-Stick Shooter experience. Both control systems offer full rebinding options.

After playing this game through a whole campaign and chewing through some of the content, I have to say it's one of the most pleasant surprises I've had in a while. This game is unpolished, janky, and somewhat finicky to play, yet it is remarkably fun and is one of the more earnest and sincere attempts to capture the magic of games like Panzer Dragoon or Star Fox 64 while expanding on both and adding quality of life improvements. The premise of the game is a simple one: you're a pilot for an interstellar republic stationed on a battleship called the Alastrius (hence the title). The republic is under attack from within via a civil war, and you and your battleship have to travel back to the capital to root out the insurrection. If this story sounds token and little more than a framing device for the action, it's because it is. I'll be frank: the story is not why anyone should play this. Instead, what we get is a quite competent on-rails flight shooter featuring branching paths via in-level triggers, a selection of unlockable ships to fly each with their own traits and quirks, and a scoring system that rewards multiple playthroughs to get better scores. I'm a huge fan of On Rail Shooter games, I've even compiled a list and categorized many onto a Google Doc that I'll place in the comments of this review, if you are curious! (It's also on my profile description.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So far I've beaten around 4-5 Campaigns and my goodness, I've been having fun with this one. The branching paths and choices for alternate route depending what you do is very refreshing! This is literally the only game that came close to matching how Star Fox 64 does their branching paths (from what I've played at least). For Gameplay, this On-Rails Shooter is what I would classify as a "Cursor" Rail Shooter. You can control your Player and your Aiming Reticle separately. Enemy variety is small, but there are unique ones in several levels, giving something new to shoot down every once in awhile. I'm usually a Controller user, however I found myself using Mouse and Keyboard to make it easier to aim at targets. I barely tried the first level using a controller and immediately switched to Mouse and Keyboard, so I have no input on how it is on Controller for now. ~~~ UNLOCKABLES!
