Anima Gate of Memories: I&II Remaster

It's a shame the art style and direction and the soundtrack are really good, because the necessary conditions for a game to be good, the gameplay and narrative, are deeply unremarkable. The voice acting is astoundingly bad, but that could be set aside of what was actually going on in the plot was clear and compelling, instead of vague, mysterious nonsense. Because Dark Souls ruined video games, now every character always has to speak in oblique gibberish and we can never just have a clear futtbucking goal to achieve and direction to go for which to achieve it. And this "puzzling it out" exploration kind of gimmick could work IF the level design and combat were markedly above average. Unfortunately, those are both also extremely average. The level design feels like a rough sketch of an idea for Zelda dungeons, back when Zelda was good, before being filled in with more meat and mechanics to make it COMPLETE, only they never filled it in, so you're getting the demo version. The combat also kind of feels like foundation of something that could be built upon, but they never built upon it, and a foundation is just a hole in the bloody ground. So the end result is wandering around …

I've played the previous two games before this Remaster and love them both. I highly recommend this verson if you've never played Anima before, but if you have then this isn't really worth playing.

Really good gem, hope Dev success in their next project

The Good: Title screen music is kinda decent. Some of Ego's lines are mildly amusing. The Bad: Everything else. The game feels like a big nothing-sub from Subway, wrapped in grotesque greasy flimsy wrapping. The Ugly: "The Nameless". Holy mother of DeviantArt, who designed this character?

This game really went beyond my expectations. The combat was significantly deeper than I thought it would be and being able to replay for bonus endings or joke endings was fun. Short but worth it
