Anima: Gate of Memories – The Nameless Chronicles, developed by Anima Project and published by Anima Publishing, is an action RPG that seeks to carve out its own identity within a crowded genre by blending deep narrative elements with dynamic combat and exploration. Rooted in the rich lore of the Anima universe, which originated as a tabletop role-playing game, this title aims to deliver a dark fantasy experience that appeals to fans of intricate stories and challenging gameplay alike. The game combines a sprawling narrative with a complex combat system, inviting players to dive into a mysterious world where every choice can influence the course of the story. At the heart of Anima: Gate of Memories is its story, which centers on The Nameless, a character who awakens in an otherworldly realm called The Beyond, a liminal space between life and death. The narrative unfolds gradually, revealing secrets about The Nameless’ past, the nature of the world, and the forces vying for control. This game is shorter than the first one. I wasted a lot of time farming to get all shop items, so it bloated the time I played significantly. The game itself is an improvement from the first one in many areas. The character feels more responsive. Voice acting sounds slightly better. At least when they use cutscenes from the first game the difference is noticeable. Items (weapons) have unique models! Nameless plays differently enough, where you also have Thanatos meter to empower each of your abilities. A good tradeoff, considering you now play as a single character. Now instead of building 2 characters differently and swap between them on the fly, you have to switch between what items you have equipped depending on the enemies you face. The game feels less difficult than the first one. Maybe it was because I played it directly after finishing the first. The story is parallel to the first one from the point of Nameless. This sadly means you have some reused assets here. Entire maps are copied from the first game. Luckily, they have some puzzles and different events to make up for it. I am hopeful that the next Anima game will be even better.

The game is very challenging for no good reason, ass camera, multiple phase boss (literally four phases) with no break or resupply, janky animation. I don’t mind any challenge as long as the combat feels good, but it’s not, it’s super floaty (no impact or feedback) and basic, and it’s janky as hell. This might be a passable game during PS2 era, but now there are way better options to spend your time on.
