The world of Apocryph is a grim, violent place, harboring magic, dark rituals and dangers around every corner. Wherever you go you'll be facing unrelenting monsters, traps and locked passages, and can only depend on yourself and your equipment to survive the trials.

- Static, carefully handcrafted levels and level-hubs, all packed with secrets, monsters and traps.
- Your character can wield up to 9 different weapons with alternative fire modes, including melee armaments, spells, staffs and artifacts.
- Items can help you in tough situations, health potions will aid your health, mana vials can restore your mana, combat items can do some damage to an opponent.

You control the Arbiter, once a person of a high rank in Xilai religious hierarchy. The Xilai were known for many things, such as their artistry, magical arts and unity. But all the worlds feared them for a different reason - the Xilai worshiped Death itself. For centuries they raided countless worlds, reaping souls in the name of their dreaded Mistress.
Events preceding the game have led to your exile, and now, after many years you return back, only to find fortresses and lands overrun with demonic spawns and vile beasts. Why were you exiled? What could cause this desolation? It's time to find some answers... and reap some demon spawn in the name of Pale Mistress.

I feel like this had potential but it really doesn't work for what it's trying to be. I think the main way it misses the mark is weapon variety. Most of the games it replicates have if not a ton of weapons at least a few distinct ones. The way the magic weapons work in this is just a little too samey, all shooting colored blobs that sort of explode on hitting an enemy or maybe don't (there isn't a lot of feedback when shooting) and they all feel almost the same to use. There's the basic blue staff that shoots a shotgun spread, a green rapid fire gauntlet, a grenade launcher(?) purple daggers, ect. But they all are just variations on the same magic missile. The weapons honestly remind me a lot more of Ziggurat than like, Powerslave or Strife, and Ziggurat is a good game but it's clearly not what they're going for with the whole heavy metal wannabe boomer shooter. Also that game is a roguelike so the weapon variety is not like the central focus. Painkiller has you staking witches to walls and shotgunning skeletons in the first levels, this game has you shooting magic blobs slightly faster at a bunch of doom demons that have really let themselves go. This is mid af. The weapons aren't fun to use, the visuals are stock and weirdly wet in some places, but what irks me most is the generic music switching to "intense" generic music when there's a bunch of hostiles on screen. Turning my mood from indifference into mild annoyance. Hostiles walk into your sightline then you whack or shoot at them, no strategy other than backpedal and strafe. There is no real sense of urgency to warrant a change in music. I don't remember how long back I bought this but I hope that I spent less than 3 dollars on this during a sale and If you paid 15, I feel bad for you.
Real throwback/ love letter to Hexen/ Heretic. If you enjoy those games and can accept that the budget wasn't as large as something like Amid Evil, this is a nice little escape,
As cool as it looks, it feels unpolished. It has that early access air about it. There is fun to be had here, but you have to really be a fan of the genre or else you're going to be too critical. I can recommend but only to said fans. Also it's a shame to see a kick in a game that has no real push to it :(
