About Arkin

NOTE - Development of Arkin has ceased indefinitely

Arkin is set in a future where humanity has been at war for decades, only to find that their true enemy, a threat to their very existence, has just appeared. As a veteran pilot in the TDF navy outfitted with the latest in starfighter technology, you are on the front lines of the battle for our survival.

    Quick Feature Rundown

    • Intense fast-paced combat, the core of Arkin
    • Utilize the advanced energy routing of your ship to switch strategies at a moment's notice
    • Fully featured single player campaign with an in-depth story
    • Extensive ship customization

      Combat

Combat is at the heart of the Arkin experience. It’s fast, dynamic, and most importantly revolves around your playstyle.

The most powerful ability you have is the Orion’s dynamic energy routing system. This allows you to change strategies on the fly by instantly sending your ship’s power reserves to whatever system you need most. You can use speed to outmaneuver your enemies, power up your shields to survive the most dangerous assaults, or overload your weapons to rain destruction on your foes.

        Story

The year is 2563, and humanity is locked in a civil war. Desperately looking to break the stalemate the TDF has developed an advanced prototype ship with unique capabilities: the Orion. You, the Orion's pilot, are part of the first TDF battlegroup to encounter a new and hostile alien race; the Arkin. With both human factions weakened by decades of war a desperate struggle begins against the Arkin, who appear unstoppable and merciless in their destruction of every human ship and colony they encounter.

          Customization

The Orion was designed around a new philosophy in starfighter engineering; the idea that he who most easily adapts is victorious, and adaptability is achieved through modularity. Nearly every system on the Orion can be easily swapped out for a different or upgraded version with almost zero downtime. With development of the Orion still in full swing those upgrades are becoming available at a steady pace.

So hard to control a good concept but a bad game.

Game is obviously not getting any further updates, which is a shame. The concept is solid, I really enjoy dog-fighting in NMS and elite dangerous, but always found that elite dangerous dog-fights take a while, and NMS is extremely easy to handle dogfights. This game is like the perfect mix, purely focusing on epic dogfight battles. Sadly, for whatever reason, the game has NEGATIVE mouse acceleration. Which means if you do a flick of the mouse, you will move extremely slowy. I always have to move my mouse super slowly to make any proper movements. I changed my pitch and yaw, no changes. I even turned my DPI to max, no changes. I have to constantly drag and reposition my mouse to do any maneuver. I really did want to play through the levels this demo has to offer, but seeing as I can't even control my ship properly it's a sad pass. Also, why is there no reverse thrusters?

Arkin is a crying shame, and I dare say an example of one of the many reasons that Valve's Early Access program is a disaster. This was a promising looking space combat sim with reasonable production values, a somewhat slimmed down/arcadey experience, but still a huge amount of potential... and because of Early Access, it was abandoned before it could be completed. Here's the thing. If the developer didn't have the opportunity to launch an incomplete game onto Steam, they would have had to finish it, and it would have been a huge success (based on what little of the game is available here). However, because of Early Access, it hit an early negative feedback loop. That is to say, the developer got a lukewarm response, so they abandoned the game. They got a lukewarm response because the game wasn't complete! Early Access, while well intentioned, consistently does more harm than good. And that's before you get shady developers like Snail games abusing it by releasing dozens of incomplete games they never intend to finish. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, pl…
