About Beat The Game
Beat the Game takes players on a journey with Mistik, the hero of Beat The Game, to uncover the mysterious, abstract universe he finds himself in after a motorbike crash. Mistik, though, is no ordinary hero - he’s a music producer. With the help of his trusty recorder, Mistik must collect the samples scattered around Beat The Game’s beautiful, dream-like environments in order to create the ultimate track. Esteemed house and techno producer, Marc Houle, is scoring the soundtrack, ensuring the player is always capable of crafting their very own club thumper.
From discarded drum sticks to the clang of a stone on metal, Beat The Game’s environments are littered with an array of sounds and colourful characters. As you explore a hazy, surreal world, discovering interesting sounds, you gradually build up a library of samples. Crack open your sequencer and the audio of the game comes to life, allowing you to use your samples in any combination you like from mellow, dusty rollers to upbeat, acid house.
You are not competing with anyone in Beat the Game. Nobody’s chasing you, there’s no one to kill. You’ll take your time, mix your sounds, try different combinations and enjoy your own soundtrack.

The trailer says: Adventure game meets music making, and neither is really true. Visually, the whole thing isn't bad at all, so the character and the environment look pretty good. The idea of collecting sounds and then mixing them as you like would have had potential if it had been thought through a little more, it almost seems as if the ideas ran out in the middle of development, or there was no more acid, I don't know. Although I really don't like this style of music, I just wanted to check it out, not rant about the music. And I don't have to, because there's far too much to criticize here. Every now and then the collected sound is all over the place and junbled up , like a bad DJ who can't do transitions, and it's annoying. Speaking of annoying, the camera is annoying AF. The movements of the character really don't look nice or smooth and sometimes he can walk through rocks, but then again not over flat cables, or whatever that is. Like many others pointed out - feels like a short tech demo. The few cutscenes are kinda nice. Walking is slow and boring as hell, nothing ever happens. There's no characters (there could be at least one, but I couldn't meet her because I didn't find all the collect-a-thon items and there was no way in-game of finding out where to look).
If you love trance music, Tim Burton, Dali and feel like taking psychedelics and/or edibles and have like an hour to kill, you'll probably enjoy this. It's short and simple, mostly you walk around hunting for sounds, while vibing to the music. It is a very small experience more so than a game. Reminds me a lot of early VR tech demos that were a bite sized proof of concept. There are worse things on Steam, but you can nearly get the whole experience from the Steam store page via the trailer and screenshots.
Great attempt to make something unique and beautiful, fusing gaming and musical experiences together. BTW game was released on my birthday :D <3
I don't think this game is for me. It wasn't fun to play
