Beyond Minimalism

"Beyond Minimalism" seems like a student project or something, or some half baked "art" exhibition. The developer is honest about what this is, the writing on the box makes it clear it's a minimalist slog with a single quest... and if that sounds like a terrible idea for a game, then you have good perception. What do you do in the game? Plod very slowly around minimalist untextured low poly environments to solve the one quest you have. That's it. Yawn. That's why I say maybe this is an art experiment, and the experiment is to see how bad a game has to get before gamers won't put up with it. Except they were charging money for this, which is in fact more amusing than the game itself. The graphics here are particularly awful, so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. Beyond Minimalism is a very small experimental adventure that I found interesting mainly because of how little it tells me. I am placed inside a strange labyrinth made from connected rooms, with the simple goal of finding clues and reaching nature. I liked the feeling of having to figure out the purpose of the world instead of being handed a long explanation at the beginning. The exploration is extremely straightforward. I walk through the rooms, look around and search for anything that might help me understand where I should go next. I enjoyed the quiet pace because it gives the environment room to speak for itself. There are no enemies constantly interrupting me, so most of my attention goes toward understanding the space. The minimal presentation is probably the most important part of the experience. The rooms are deliberately plain and repetitive, which makes the moments where I find something different stand out more. I liked how the lack of visual detail creates a strange sense of isolation, even though the game is not trying to be traditional horror. Механика слияния фигур интуитивно понятна, но стратегическое мышление становится ключевым для достижения высоких результатов. Визуальный стиль минималистичен, как и следует из названия, но при этом элегантен и не утомляет глаза. Музыкальное сопровождение ненавязчиво и хорошо дополняет игровой процесс, создавая расслабляющую атмосферу. Игра идеально подходит для коротких игровых сессий, когда нужно отвлечься и немного "размять" мозг. Впрочем, легко увлечься на несколько часов, стремясь побить свой рекорд. Не хватает разве что более разнообразных игровых режимов или возможностей кастомизации, но в целом это отличный представитель жанра головоломок, который затягивает своей простотой и глубиной одновременно. Рекомендую всем любителям казуальных, но при этом требующих логики игр.
