About Blackwell Deception

✦ AI summary

Play as a genuine psychic investigating murders connected to fraudulent fortune tellers across New York City's seediest locations. Uncover dark secrets in the underground psychic underworld while managing the complicated dynamic between you and your mischievous spirit guide companion.

Street psychics. Their blinking neon signs are everywhere, promising love and wealth and happiness. They make a fortune preying on the gullible and milking them dry. So when these victims begin dying and leaving confused spirits behind, it can only take a genuine psychic (and her wayward spirit guide) to clean up the mess.

From seedy downtown nightclubs to penthouse apartments to a luxury yacht on the Hudson River, Rosa and Joey will unearth the truth about the underground world of street psychics. Including some secrets that Joey would rather be left buried.

Playing the Blackwell games back to back, and they just keep getting better. This has been my favourite story in the series so far its incredibly dark, with a mysterious villain and a really satisfying payoff at the end. The voice acting and music are fantastic once again. Just a genuinely great series of games.

Another great game in this series. A very well done point & click game with great voice acting, story, and puzzles. Great atmosphere and music too.

The 4th Blackwell game was a strong entry narratively, with some weaker elements in the design side. The Pros: - The voice acting is, in my opinion, the best it's been up to this point, even if the implementation technically sometimes has lines playing in too rapid succession. - The interiority of the two protagonists, Joey especially, is explored in fresh and compelling ways, and the feeling of the pair's growth as a team across games is satisfying. - The usage of the pair to solve and interact with puzzles feels the most balanced its been. The Cons: - I had to check external guides more than I have in other games, with a few instances of very small objects or even one not visible to the player at the game's camera angle being crucial to understanding and advancing a puzzle. _ The character sprites felt... worse? I'm not sure why, but Rosa's sprite was not impressive especially. I'm still fond of the character portraits however, and there's one beat where the pair just exchanges looks, an interaction solely told in portraiture, that made me laugh. - I would've liked to see more exploration of the themes of loneliness and unfulfillment be reflected in the protagonists than …

As good as previous ones, and maybe some aspects of the story are ever better.
