This game has been out for almost TWO YEARS at the time I write this review, and only has ONE purchased review and just 4 key redemption reviews! W T F ? This game is a super cool, super fun little indie gem that is made with tons of heart and passion by the developer(s)!! It should be a crime that this game hasn't gotten more well deserved attention here on Steam! Brainmelter Deluxe is a 2D retro pixel platformer with a fairly basic and uncommon (but not unique) twist, and that is when you press space, instead of jumping, you rotate the level you're on, which of course will make you fall in particular directions. Of course the puzzle levels are full of spikes and spinning blades, so turning the map at the right times is crucial to solving each puzzle level in the game. Problematically, the developer used a number of Unity assets when making the game, but they didn't credit the authors of those packages (DOTween, FMOD, InControl etc), which, while not necessarily a license violation, does put the developer in the somewhat unethical position of claiming the work of others as their own. This isn't okay. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Brainmelter Deluxe is a refreshingly unconventional 2D platformer that challenges players to rethink everything they know about jumping, gravity, and movement. Developed and published by Cosmocat, this indie title introduces a fascinating gameplay mechanic where every jump rotates the entire level by 90 degrees. What initially sounds like a simple gimmick quickly becomes an intricate test of reflexes, timing, and spatial awareness. Brainmelter Deluxe is one of those platformers that sounds simple until I actually try to play it. The basic idea is that the entire level rotates whenever I jump, which completely changes how I think about movement. I found that gimmick immediately interesting because it takes something as ordinary as jumping and turns it into the main source of confusion and challenge. The rotation mechanic is easily the strongest part of the game. Every jump can change the orientation of the level, so I have to constantly adjust to where the platforms are and where I am going to land. I liked how quickly this turns basic movement into a reflex test. Once I start getting comfortable, I can move through sections more confidently, but one bad jump can still send everything into chaos. The procedural level generation works nicely with the idea too. Every run can present a different arrangement, so I cannot simply memorize a route and repeat it perfectly. The permadeath structure adds even more pressure because mistakes have real consequences.
