About Britannia

Britannia is the eponymous adaptation of the historical board game that broadly depicts the age-old conflict for control of Britain from 43 to 1066 A.D. Leave your mark on the island and take control of England, Scotland, and Wales.

Game mechanics

Britannia uses the same ruleset as the historical board game and relies on support from the original creators. Take control of a nation and issue strategic recommendations to move forward and gain the upper hand over your enemies.

Earn victory points by conquering and keeping territories, defeating enemy units, and being elected Bretwalda or King of England.

Key features

  • History

The game begins with the Roman invasion in 43 A.D., continues through the many conflicts between the Angles, Saxons, Picts, Norwegians, Scots, Irish, and other peoples, and ends with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Play as the rebellious Queen Boudica, legendary King Arthur, Danish King Knut, or William the Conqueror and leave a mark on the early history of Britain.
  • Strategic depth

Develop your nation, manage your army, and fight by choosing the battlefield that will lead you to victory. But that's just the beginning – numerous unique game mechanics await you in Britannia!
  • Alternate history

Take control of Albion's destiny! In Britannia, you can change the course of history and create diverse outcomes.
  • Scenarios and customization

Playable offline with 1 to 4 players across 3 scenarios, including the Roman invasion of 43 A.D., the 5th-century Germanic invasions, and the invasions from the North (by Danes, Vikings, and Normans) until around 1066.
  • A faithful adaptation of the board game

Lewis Pulsipher's masterpiece is brought to life in 2022 with the digital version thanks to Philippe Thibaut (Europa Universalis, Ageod, Avalon Digital games, SGS series).

Great game but too buggy. Britannia is a fantastic game and it mostly plays well on this conversion, but it is too buggy. I managed to play my first game through without trouble but I have tried to play a few more games since then and they have ended in game stopping bugs. Really annoying.

A faithful recreation of the board game experience, with one exception. In person, you might be dealing with slow players; now, you have to click a button to get each AI player to take the next part of their turn. Want two AIs to roll for their battle? Click a button. Nobody died, need them to do it again? Need to click a button. Now that they're all done, want to move to the next player's turn? Need to click a button. As a result, a game of digital Britannia takes about as long to play as the physical version does.

This is awesome! Havin just read most of Bernard Cornwell's works good time! This adaptation of the board game has you playing as a series of different nations and empires. So for instance, one player plays as the Romans, the British Romans, The scots and Normans, another plays the jutes and the angles, another plays as Denmark another the Saxons ETC. It renacts British history from Casesar to William of Normandy. Its not always the same! While events happen as depicted in history this doesn't mean the Northmen win and the last battle might not be in Hastings ETC. You win based on how many territory and which ones your assigned nation wins and how many Roman legions you kill. Keep in mind also that even if you don't do well at first there's opportunity close to the end. Likewise the player who plays the Romans is going to end up in a slump.

Britannia is the computerized version of an old wargame by Avalon Hill. In it you play various nations through one thousand years (43-1066) of British history. You get points for holding or taking various provinces on killing certain units. Simple to learn - a good beginner's game.

It's really satisfying to see the events unfold, although the gameplay is a bit simplistic.
