Broken Pieces

I have no idea why people here compare this game to Resident Evil. It’s not even close. Before I start, I should say that I didn’t really like the game. As some reviews put it, it’s “broken pieces.” And that’s pretty accurate. The game feels like a patchwork made from completely different elements. And while the puzzles are mostly fine, the gunplay and the story are awful. The plot itself is intriguing, but it has neither a proper beginning nor an ending. It feels like they just dropped the story halfway through because they had to rush it out. There are so many cliffhangers setting up a second season, which will probably never be released. And the fights… The game honestly could have been much better without them. The combat feels clunky, especially when you’re constantly shooting at the same bots with terrible aim. But the biggest disappointment for me is the timer. I hate games with timers. Here, it’s basically used to force you to go back home after you’ve traveled far away. You’re already tired from sneaking around and looking for clues to solve a puzzle, and then the developers artificially make the whole process longer. Not cool. I really wish there was a "circumstances depending" option for recommending a game on steam. I played through Broken Pieces pretty quickly and most of what I saw were thoughts and ideas that could've been really good. Aside from experiencing several crashes on up-to-date drivers, the story itself feels like it both begins and ends in the middle. You're dropped in media res, which is totally fine, but then credits also roll with so much narrative unresolved. Several of the assets appear to be early GenAI images. Nothing game breaking, but really just emblematic of the rest of the experience of things seeming either rushed or lazy. The story left me asking "why are we doing this" for the last two hours. Because we are looking for our roommate who we maybe dated but who has a separate bedroom? Because we're worried about the city? Because there's... Maybe a threat from an Eldritch sea beast? When credits rolled, I literally said to the screen "that's it?" I understand there are limitations with a small team, but that means you also have to limit what story you're trying to tell. If you can catch this game on sale for $5, it is a mildly entertaining way to pass a few hours. However, do not go into it expecting a polished masterpiece. The entire experience can be summed up in one word: "meh." The Bad: Stiff Presentation: Character controls and animations feel incredibly rigid and stiff. Amateur Rigging: The character rigging is noticeably poor. It genuinely looks like it was outsourced to one of the interns listed in the credits. Underwhelming Art: The character art lacks polish and fails to stand out. Bland Narrative: The story is flat, uninspired, and frankly quite boring. Language Annoyance: The constant presence of French text everywhere becomes plain annoying after a while. The Good: Decent Puzzles: The puzzles are mildly engaging and keep your brain working enough to prevent total boredom. Frequent Discounts: The game drops to $5 very often. At that price point, the value is fair. Final Verdict: It is a thoroughly middle-of-the-road game. Buy it only on a deep sale if you have a weekend to kill and love puzzle games, but keep your expectations low.

Unfortunately I ran into the gun bug of not being able to shoot on the shooting range. Restarted the game and made it through that part. Then came the 2nd bug, I felled the tree on the way to the lighthouse, and I then could not cross the felled tree. Character would just jump on an off the felled tree. I played it multiple times and couldn't progress pass that point. I played for the 2 hours or a bit less. I put in for the refund and I rarely ever refund games. I would really have like this game and gave it my best effort, but in the end it seems was made for console and had not adapted to PC correctly. I played with over the shoulder camera rather than fixed camera. I also played with reduced enemy rather than Original. It is what it is, and the graphics looked really nice and I was comfortable with the key binds. Would also be nice if there was an FOV slider.

Really good game! Loving the story. I'm really enjoying the exploration and piecing the story together. The combat is alright. It's interesting how the enemies appear. The graphics are pretty good all except for these one patches of grass. They look like wavy blobs lol. They aren't that bad. I'm playing in VR using UEVR so it could be the VR makes it stand out a little to me. The graphics look really good in my headset. VR makes it much more immersive even though it's 3rd person. The inventory system is just right on space. Not many games get that right. The puzzles are fun. Challenging but nothing requiring a whole lot of thought. I normally don't like a lot of puzzles but like I said these are fun. Game runs super smooth even in VR with settings maxed out. I did come across one bug. It was a bit annoying. The game saves when you sleep. I went to sleep and the game saved. When the character woke up I quit the game. When I came back to play again the journal had not updated correctly which kept the game from progressing. It took me quite a while before I realized that though. A satisfying Resi like exploration puzzle game that happens to have occasional combat and a pretty interesting story. You'll go through a small village gathering items and finding ways to progress even deeper in as well as a few powers that you will use to change the setting to either stormy or snowy. The combat is a bit eh in the fact that it is a bit simple. There only seems to be 3 types of enemies and they all do relatively the same move set. You should use your super ammo as often as you can, not because it's needed but to just make things faster. Got through the whole game never using it at all and feel a smidge of regret there. Should take about a 8-10 stretch the first time to get 100% as well as a quick 3-4 sprint for the last achievement. Do note that the Broken Pieces Wiki works as the best kind of checklist at the end of the game to do a cleanup before finishing. Would absolutely say that $10 is a fair price for what is here.
