Candleknight has charming visuals, an intriguing design, and passionate effort from its developers, but is held back by significant technical issues that frustrate players. Major complaints include pervasive bugs (game-breaking crashes, frozen enemy AI, character freezing), substantial input delay, clunky controls, and performance stuttering, making the experience feel unpolished despite the appealing art style and interesting metroidvania-like gameplay foundation.
It is painfull to give this game a negative review as there's a lot of charm and potential here, but candleknight is one of the least polished games i've ever played. There's so many bugs in this game, it's almost as if it wasn't properly playtested. Bugs ranging from a gamebreaking one that required a restart, losing an hour of progress in the process, to a bossfight coming to a halt because the AI completely froze. In fact enemy AI often breaks, freezing them in place, this even happened to my player character once, where i couldn't move anymore and had to quit out of the game. Ledge detection, input delay and hitboxes are also very finnicky. The performance is also nothing to write home about, with frequent stuttering when loading into an area or respawning. So the game is rough but these issues can be fixed with a lot of patches, but is it fun when it works? Sorta yeah, but the game design is odd. There's this gameplay system called the 'ignis gauge' which fills up as you get in hits on enemies. The fuller the gauge the more damage you deal but also the more damage you take. Sounds like an interesting system that rewards skillfull play until you realize that in about 8 hits y…15 found this helpful
absolute trash, input delay of half a second on every button press. combat makes no sense. controls feel extremely jank and clunky. would not recommend. if you want a fun metroidvania experience do not buy this.3 found this helpful
This game has a really intriguing design! Gameplay is acceptable a little bit mechanic but not unenjoyable, after all it is a good game whit a good soundtrack. Passion is there for sure it just needs to be refined! BONUS: Runs Well on Steam Deck!!3 found this helpful
Candle Knight is a 2.5D metroidvania-like platformer wherein you can explore more of the areas of this castle/house with the abilities you learn as you progress, like the dash or the double jump. There's no map but there is an ability you get later on that lets you warp between checkpoints. The combat is very simple. There's an ignition gauge, being a candle knight, you have a little candle on your head. As you beat things up, the fire burns brighter. At mid level burn, you gain some extra defense, but at max burn you lose defense in favor of gaining extra attack power. Just don't get hit by anything while you're like that because it'll really hurt lol. You have a sword that can combo 3 hits and a shield that can block projectiles. I would caution against really using the shield for much else. If you block while lacking much ignition, you will be stunned and you will experience a world of hurt with a lack of invuln frames. It's quite punishing. You also can't block every attack even with gauge. I am not quite sure which attacks are blockable at all so I just attacked and ran back, or dashed through them and attacked while they were busy attacking the other way. This game has quit…
A very strenuous recommendation. There's some effort put into this one, but it falls short in a number of ways. Sound effects are hit-and-miss on when they play, or what volume they play at. It looks very nice with the visuals it's aiming to offer, but suffers from the dissonance of a 3D world where you're locked to a 2D plane. Numerous times I found a gate that, were I not locked to a 2D plane, the li'l candle knight could just step around the gate to bypass it entirely. Some other regions weren't so bad for this, but it popped up often enough that I found it jarring. The opportunity to have multiple planes to travel across or different set-ups for traversal was very rarely used, the camera usually panning off in one direction to give a static field but that tended to be the most of what would happen. Music was not unpleasant - didn't blow my socks off but didn't make me reach for the mute key. The combat... is interesting. There's something there, the spark of something interesting, but it doesn't feel like it was well-implemented? Maintaining a sustained offensive fills up a Flame Gauge, and this allows you to move faster. It also increases your Attack at the cost of your …
So candle knight was way more platforming then I thought and I will say, I'm bad at platforming. That being said I played a bit but watched my friend do a complete run through so obviously it's got something to it. Pros: - The aesthetic was super neat. The bosses in particular. - The bosses and trials seemed to give a solid difficulty to people - A good use of the game assets to make the levels feel well built. Cons: - It has some minor bugs at this point - The graphics could use a little more polish as far as the textures are concerned. - The back tracking aspects were a bit cumbersome This game does not feel like a first release by a studio. It's really well done! But I also feel like with a bit more experience the devs good make this a top tier franchise in no time. I give it 4/5 burning candles.
