About Change the World

"Human belief is the most unbelievable force in the universe."

The story:
On the third planet of the Sol system in the Milky Way galaxy, there lives a remarkable species. Known as humans, this race has the incredible ability to change reality through the power of belief. When enough humans believe something is true, it becomes true. The stronger their belief, the stronger the effect. No other species in existence can interact with metaphysical energies the way humans can.

For millennia, alien races have traveled to Earth in order to exploit this power. If enough humans believe you're a genius, then you are. Convince them you can travel at the speed of light, suddenly you can. And if they believe you're rich, you'll be drowning in credits without even trying.

The good times ended once the Federation found out what was happening. Travel to and from the Sol system became heavily regulated, and today Earth is the most locked-down planet in the universe. On top of that, humans are advancing, and convincing them of the impossible has gotten tougher than ever. This hasn't stopped the flow of fortune-seekers, who even now will pay any price to get a ticket to Earth, and a chance to get something no other race in the universe can provide.

One of those fortune-seekers is Farien Aanarhi, an Earth-jumper from the planet Phaelon. Three years ago, Farien sold off his most prized possession to pay for his ticket to Earth, thinking he could easily make humans believe he was insanely wealthy. Things haven't worked out the way he'd hoped. He now finds himself flat broke, deep in debt, and on the verge of being deported back to his home planet. He only has seven days left on Earth, and one last chance to turn things around before he loses everything.

Change the World did one thing to anger me but it was a big thing. It lists multiple endings on the store page and while it’s not outright lying it also isn’t totally honest. There is really just one ending with a whole bunch of ways to fail getting that one ending. Every other ending is basically you getting killed or thrown in jail. I would have liked to see some actual branching with well thought out alternatives to the main ending. Past that there were some positives. The music was well done. I also really enjoyed the back and forth between Farlen and Izzy and wished there was more of it. The art style was also appealing and soft. The story was overall decent but what was impressive was the world building. There was an incredible amount of lore explored with various alien races; factions; rules; etc. I woudl certainly like to see the developer set more games in this universe. I played Change the World on Linux. It never crashed and I didn’t notice any bugs or spelling issues. You can manually save whenever you want and there are forty eight save slots. Alt-Tab didn’t work. Game Engine: Ren’Py 7.4.0.1167 Graphics API: OpenGL Disk Space Used: 137 MB Game Version Played: 1.0.5…

Nearly six years ago, I was hired on Fiverr by Tea Leaf Studios to be the voice of the landlord for Change the World. Imagine my excitement. It was my first video game. It didn't pay diddly but it was a fun project. I gave it my best Danny DeVito (Taxi) inspired effort and still use it today as a demo on one of my Fiverr gigs. I was crestfallen to learn the studio hadn't used any of the voice actors audio upon release. Supposedly v1.06 would have remedied that but v1.06 as far as I can tell was never released. Now that nearly six years have slipped by, I thought was it time to say something for the record although it's relatively meaningless at this point. Honestly I can't say one way or the other how good the game may be. I never play it. Visual novels just aren't my jam. So I can't leave a negative or positive recommendation (Steam says I have to pick so I'll keep it positive).

Change the World is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This junior high school anime club dropout fanfiction cringefest is all about "saving the world", and it's pure garbage, although I will say it was nice of the "author" of this train wreck to let an elementary school kid submit his crayon drawings for the "illustrations". This is a completely cringey dumpster fire of a fan-fiction. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you…
