Chinese Paladin: Sword and Fairy, developed by SOFTSTAR TECHNOLOGY (BEIJING) and published by SOFTSTAR TECHNOLOGY (BEIJING) and SOFTSTAR ENTERTAINMENT, is a landmark title in the history of Chinese role-playing games, carrying a legacy that extends far beyond its mechanics. Originally released in the 1990s and later brought to modern platforms, it represents an era when storytelling and cultural identity took precedence over technical sophistication. The game is deeply rooted in the traditions of xianxia—a genre that blends martial arts, mythology, and spiritual philosophy—and it uses this foundation to craft an experience that feels distinct from both Western RPGs and Japanese counterparts of its time. The narrative follows Li Xiaoyao, a young man whose seemingly ordinary life gradually transforms into a journey shaped by fate, love, and sacrifice. What begins as a personal story soon expands into something far more sweeping, weaving together human relationships and supernatural conflicts in a way that feels both intimate and grand. The game places a strong emphasis on emotional storytelling, often prioritizing character interactions and dramatic developments over gameplay system…

This game is a notable improvement on the previous older editions; aside from the obvious graphics update, you can now see (improved) item descriptions in more places than just your menu screen, the battle menus have been refined somewhat, hidden items now sparkle on the screen, and I think I saw some added lines of new dialogue as well. Also while the new controls take a bit of getting used to, they aren't too bad overall. The downsides I've seen would be that the menus themselves are still basically the same as the original, and as the script itself is mostly unchanged, I can definitely say the game is a product of its time; there's one or two details of the early plot that annoyed me before and still annoy me now. There's also no support for other languages besides Chinese, which could be a problem for anyone unfamiliar with the language. (I thought about translating it for a hot minute, but I don't understand code enough to find the script, let alone mess around with it.) Overall, still a good game worth getting!
